So I stood in the local Makro Liquor yesterday, ready to buy something nice to drink by my lonesome (SO does not drink Whiskey), had the Black Bush, Singleton, Glenmorangie & Tullamore Dew 12 year in my hand (basket...).
Could not make up my mind whether I'm looking to drink a nice blend or single malt.
After 30 minutes of wandering around, guess what? I walked out with nothing ........ WAT

Any help???

Read up:

My favourite is A good single malt. Recently i bought something new to SA called Monkey Shoulder, it's a blended malt and is spectacular. Awesome flavor and worth a lot more than the price IMO.

Can be found at your local Makro for around R300.

Whiskey sitting in my cupboard at the moment (sealed).

A bottle of Johnny Walker Black, Singleton and Talisker (1L bottle).

I am lucky if mine lasts longer than 2 weeks. Have to keep telling the SO to stop pouring "vark doppe". :p

Same problem here :D

I'd suggest you try the Glenmorangie

I ended up buying a gift pack of Singleton & a gift pack of Glenmorangie.
The Singleton was very nice & smooth, but the Glenmorangie came out on top. Very VERY nice Whisky for that price. Paid R300 each @ Makro Liquor in Cape Gate.

Was eyeing the Talisker @ R469, but why have 1 bottle when you can have 2 :)

Yes, both single malts, but a good buy. Will try a nice blend next month :D

So who's been to the Whisky Festival?

Favorite tasting so far was the 25 yr Bunnahabhain . It's only at these event where i can afford to taste whisky like that hehe.

I am going tonight! And I will look out for your recommendation.

Went last night.

Glenmorangie LaSanta rocked my face

Also any of the Glenlivet (excluding the Nadurra, didn't really do it for me)

I'm generally a Jameson's drinker.. At R220 a bottle it's pricey, especially since i have neighbours and friends popping around a couple of times a week, and generally ending up finishing a bottle or 2.

Have resorted to buying slightly cheaper brands of whiskey for the weeknight sessions.. Hankey Bannister .. not a bad whiskey at all .. fairly smooth .. no unpleasant aftertaste.

Saw this thread and decided to post my 2 cents.
I currently have a couple whiskies sealed at home as I have a policy of buying a bottle or 2 every month at payday as my own personal "gift".

I have the following whiskies:
Singleton (12 Year)
Glenmorangie (single malt 10 Year)
Maccallan (10 Year)
James King (12 Year)
James king (Speyside single malt 12 Year)
Glenfiddich (12 Year)
Jameson (12 Year)
Johnny Black (12 Year)
Glenlivet (12 Year)
Bains
Bells Special Reserve
Wiliam Lawson (12 Year)

Bourbons:
Elijah Craig (12 Year)
Wild Turkey Rare Breed
W.L Weller (12 Year)

I plan on buying a couple of whiskies over the festive period, I am looking at getting the following:
James King (21 Year)
Macallan 1824 Amber
Elmer T Lee (Bourbon)
Woodford Reserve (Bourbon)

I must admit that I really enjoy the Jamesons and the James King whiskies, but have a good liking to a really nice bourbon as well. I have not tried the Wild Turkey rare breed as yet (64% alcohol) but I believe it is very nice even though its pretty strong.
Anyone interested in trying a nice bourbon at a really decent price must buy the Elijah Craig, its fantastic.

So I tried it on Friday night. It was my personal favourite, but at R 2 200 a bottle, eish, just a little too steep for me.

I also tried something Taiwanese. Terrible stuff. Both my mate and brother in law tried the Taiwanese stuff, but we tried something different. One sip was enough for us to know it was swill.

I went to a Talisker tasting session and sampled 4 of their whiskeys. There was one finished in a Sherry Cask which was quite nice.

A Glenmorangie Lasanta started my evening, which was soured a bit by a Macallan right at the end. A good night all in.

A fine collection you have there, Squire.

Wife took me whisky tasting in Dullstroom yesterday. Did "Through the ages". Cannot wait to go back. Sensory overload...

Sounds like a truly delightful adventure. Did you stay over anywhere there?

Festival was not as good as last year in my view. I enjoyed the Jack Daniels talk, bought a Sinatra for myself, the tasting at bunnahabanen (forgive spelling !!) was also good

Ye - we went for Fri and Sat night. Just the 2 of us. Been 6 years since we got a weekend away together (mother in law used to baby sit and passed away 6 years back).

Was really a nice experience. After the whisky tasting we just wondered from restaurant to pup to restaurant having a beer, whisky or southern comfort until we eventually settled down at a sports bar for the rugby. Waaaay too many whiskies went down there. Thankfully we were only staying about 300m up the road from it :)

Have you guys tried the compass box range? Went to a tasting a few months back and really enjoyed their less peaty offering.. Great king street.. Nice easy drinking whiskey.
