I must admit you hit a bit of a raw nerve there so

======= rant =========

Yep. I can't help but feel gamed with the blends though.

Its the same with beer. I have *real world* faith in Windhoek's Reinheitsgebot. Its a marketing gimmick sure, but if it ever turns out that they throw some chemical in there then a shtstorm will hit them like a ton of bricks...they built their brand on this, so thats a serious incentive to keep it pure & I have confidence in it. Castle etc...they do whatever they want. It should be OK..probably...maybe...kinda....hopefully. Maybe there is a brand that tastes better than WHK...I just couldn't be arsed to go exploring given the above.

Same thing with the blends. I'm totally willing to take a hit on raw taste...I just can't stand companies playing alchemy 101 with what I consume and then not declaring it on the label. Hell even the scotch single malt I'm drinking right now....30 sec of googling suggests that at the very least they tampered with the colouring via caramel. The label naturally doesn't mention this (it appears to be permitted under Scottish rules).

I'm slightly confused about you saying they're "adding stuff", are you referring to after they've finished the distillation and aging process??

I like the tast of bourbon, I normally buy Jack or jim beam (depending on whitch one is on special). But lately have been buying JW Red.
I have a bottle of Makers Mark that i got as a gift anyone tried this yet?? I also like my drink with ice and a dash of water, sometimes i will use a lot of ice and no water and sip it while the ice melts.
@Beans100 I also got the HOGS 3 at Makro have not opened it yet but looking forward to it

My kinda thread. I stick to Johnnie Walker only, loved Bushmills 12 YO when I tried it out, but will never change from JW at this point (9-10 year loyalty now).

Johnnie Walker Double Black is my new favourite, which I switch back and forth with JW Black Label when my budget is a tad low. Tried Swing and I have to say, greatness. Nothing will ever beat this Scotsman's blended whiskey!

My favourite is A good single malt. Recently i bought something new to SA called Monkey Shoulder, it's a blended malt and is spectacular. Awesome flavor and worth a lot more than the price IMO.

Many many years back I was told that I was entitled to free Glenfiddich whiskey.
But there was a catch, I had to be a resident of Dufftown in Scotland. (the location of the distillery & birthplace of the "ancestors")
Turns out my great grandparents & grandparents had close ties to the distillery in Scotland and were also involved in some sort of land swap with the distillery.

Over the years I have had occasional correspondence with the good folk at Glenfiddich with a view of visiting the birthplace of my grandparents etc.
Out of the blue some years back I got an email stating that if I were in Dufftown on my 50th birthday (some years away unfortunately) they would make "a very special plan for me".
Could that possibly be a bottle of a 50yr old ??
I would certainly make the trip for that !!

Mmmm, just googled it, the bottle and label (even the type of paper) resembles the Hog 3, I mean the bottle and everything (except the monkeys) looks the same. lol

Almost finished a bottle of Bushmills Blackbush  and the Johnny Walker Black is also running low. I'll definitely get Blackbush again but also looking for something else...not sure what though. Must go shopping this weekend :D

Jameson 12year old Special Reserve

smooth

Last week at a bar saw someone dash with crème soda. Sad to say he was part of our group. Sure it was only JW Black, but still :erm:

So I stood in the local Makro Liquor yesterday, ready to buy something nice to drink by my lonesome (SO does not drink Whiskey), had the Black Bush, Singleton, Glenmorangie & Tullamore Dew 12 year in my hand (basket...).
Could not make up my mind whether I'm looking to drink a nice blend or single malt.
After 30 minutes of wandering around, guess what? I walked out with nothing ........ WAT

Any help???

Singleton is nice... but even better is
Jameson Select Reserve (my favourite favourite)(slightly smoky)
else Cape Bains is also quite good (although a bit more sweeter) - and at Liquor City plus 2 glases for only R210 :)
