No a tv set requires a license. It's quite clear in the regulations. It's only in recent years that the SABC has come up with this unproven crap.

I personally do not buy anything off Gumtree for lots of reasons. Other than buying someone else's second hand crap my Bosses brother bought building sand once. He got to the site and all looked legit. He started loading up the sand and next thing he was held up at gun point. Not the first time I heard about this kinda stuff happening. But anyways if you comfortable buying off there just stay safe

Thus R265 X 12 = R3,180 a year = R31,800 once-off fee for every TV set you buy.

Because a once-off fee will need to be a lot bigger than the current annual fee to align the pockets of the fat cats.

Would happily buy a monitor but they're not common in the large sizes unless you want to go higher resolution as well. Doesn't just cost more but an arm and a leg. Don't know why they can't just make regular tvs without a tuner.

Nope, nee, not, glad nie, never ever. Refuse to speak to their lawyers, cellphone reception is for some reason always poor when they phone me. During 2014, on a Saterday afternoon two sabc inspectors knocked on my front door (living in a secure complex, no fence or gates) wanting to see my sabc license. "I'm house sitting for a friend and he will only be back from the States in six months time and no I'm refusing to except any paperwork addressed to him and I really do not know where he filed his TV license". Asked them to come back in six months time and still waiting.

PS. I succeeded in getting my licence cancelled. Took me 3 effing years and a lot of normal post letters to get it done tho.

As mentioned ad nauseum on this forum, a TV licence is not for any service provided by the SABC. It is a licence to own a TV tuner.

Ostensibly, but we all know it's an arbitrary tax that exists to fund the SABC.
