Why does everyone overtake on the left?

Driving 100kmph in the right lane - I agree with you. Driving 120 - I disagree. Nobody has the right to break the law. That includes speeding.

Remember your speedometer are probably wrong anyway. All the new cars have a safety margin in their speedometers, so you should always drive left first. That is the first and most important rule, drive left, overtake right. I actually think it is the people that drive in the middel road that causes all this congestion on our roads. If I am in the fast lane and someone faster comes behind me, I can't move over because there is a long line off people driving 90-100km/h in the middle lane. I saw this yesterday aswell driving from midrand to pretoria, the whole left lane was open, but the two middle lanes were full of cars, and the people trying to go fast are then forced to overtake the people in the left lane. I don't agree with them either because the speedlimit is 80 still, but you have to stay left, if you are not overtaking. I found that staying left will get you there faster anyway, with all the people driving slow in the middle lanes.

Its simple
People who like going fast are mighty pissed off at people in the right hand lane (regardless of their speed) because they cant force them to move left but the people hogging the lane have the power to force the speeders to slow down. ie the lane hoggers have all the power, the speeders have none.
I'll happily move over to the left personally, but if I'm doing 120-125 and am busy overtaking the cars in the middle lane you best not sit on my rear bumper trying to make me switch lanes or go faster.

I think you hit it on the head, as long as you are overtaking you are allowed in the right hand side.

This is where the 2 second following distance comes in.

For safety the driver behind me should be 2 seconds behind me. If he gets too close I am forced to slow down to get that distance to 2 seconds to keep not only myself safe, but also the driver behind me.

Just another friendly service I provide on the road.

You sound like my Mom. ;)

Chances are the person behind you has a faster car with a better breaking system, and faster reactions.

breaking the law to enforce the law sounds like a great idea

*twaddle*

I see you've left my previous post unanswered. I'll take that as an indication that we are in agreement, and that you'll **** off left in future. It is not the "cruising at the speed limit lane" or the "imposing my self-righteousness on others lane" or the "hey, I'm just helping our poor Metro cops lane", it is the overtaking lane. Overtake, and **** off left. The same principle applies to every other lane on a multi-lane freeway except for the left-most. Overtake, and **** off left.

Agree with this. Faster cars have better handling and braking systems. In a ideal world speed limits would be different for different cars. A person doing 120km/hr in a Yaris is much more dangerous than someone doing 150km/hr in a sports car built to handle speed.

Do you have any idea how much you endangered everyone else on the road by getting in your car and driving while having a heart attack? Even more so by speeding. How many other people could you have killed if you lost control of your vehicle?

This is the type of selfish **** I talk about. YOU wanted to save YOUR own ass and disregarded EVERYONE ELSE's safety.

I do not mind that. At least it gets you to slow down for a bit.

It is not your job to enforce the lane people drive in. It is your job (by law) to drive within the speed limit and let those driving in the "wrong" lane get caught by the authorities.
A person speeding is in the wrong. It is not that person's responsibility to enforce driving in the correct lane for whatever reason. Leave that to the authorities and go race on your XBox.

Well too bad for you - a cop saw the whole thing saw that I was in trouble pulled the car over arrested the guy left his partner there and gave me an escort to the hospital. So I wonder who was in the right.

and for the record I did phone an ambulance first - they told me they could only get someone to my place in an hour where the hospital is 20 mins away.

So in conclusion if you are telling to rather stay home and die and not cause you the inconvenience of complying with the law you can you @!#$%@# yourself you self righteous piece of #@@#%@

I just realised that dip****s like you are most likely the reason the Ambulance was going to take so long - so that's a double @!#$ you

Nothing wrong with being in the right lane, regardless of your speed, as long as you are overtaking. Just as long as you move back to the left when you're done overtaking.

I don't see anyone here advocating speeding, it seems to be implied by the lane hoggers. The fact that you're doing 120 does not entitle you to a permanent spot in the right lane, as that lane is for overtaking only.

Breaking the law (speeding) sounds like a great idea. You fix that and I'll fix whatever is wrong on my side, mkay? But I doubt you will. You just feel that you want to speed and everyone should get out of your way. Not happening. Not while you are speeding.

Let me think about that for a second. Hmmmm. No.
Stop speeding and I will not be a problem for you. There, fixed.

You are forgetting about the driver. No matter how good the steering or breaking system is, it is still driver operated. Owning a fast car does not make you a good driver, contrary to popular believe under fast car owners.

I call bull****. You are just trying to make your point by making up bull**** stories.

And how many people would have had to wait for the ambulance had you lost control of your car and crashed into someone else?
Are you telling me that your life is more important than everyone else on the road?

Careful with that anger and aggression. You will give yourself a heart attack.

do you admit that you're breaking the law? i don't have a problem with you hogging the fast lane, i'll just pass you on the left ;)

uFiS, you are being a knob. Others speeding or not has absolutely sweet **** all to do with the argument. If you are in any lane other than the left-most lane you can reasonably and safely be in, and you are not in the process of overtaking someone else, you are in the wrong. Just accept it & move on.

You can weasel all you want, you will continue to be wrong. Your constant "yes, but speeding..." tolly is nothing but straw. It is irrelevant.

You're legally allowed to exceed the speed limit by 10 km/h. If you take into account the error in speedometer readings, an indicated 135 would be about 130.

Try and justify it whichever way you want - you have no proof of how fast the person behind you is going (true speed, not the speedo reading on your POS). They however have proof that you're being a lane hogging knob.

If I am doing 120, technically I am busy passing everyone (that is keeping within the law) or at least doing the same speed as they are. So, no, I am not breaking the law.

You can weasel all you want about me that should not be there. If you are not speeding I will not be a problem. This is the part that makes speeding relevant. Calling it straw will not make it any less relevant.

The law does not allow you to exceed the speed limit. Prosecution of the law only starts at 131km/h to allow for error. Do not see this as the law allowing you to drive at 130km/h.

Someday you will be in need of driving or being driven fast for whatever medical or personal reason. Remember this discussion (if you are alive) and have to attend the funeral of a loved one or family member that could have been saved if a loser like you weren't in the fast lane. Then remember how childish your comments were (ooooh ooooh this is my lane and I am allowed to) When you feel that sting just realise that karma is a bitch and she has eight arms to violate you with.

uFiS, you do realise that by trying to teach the "speeding" driver a lesson by hogging the fast lane, you are endangering your own life, the speeding drivers' life, as well as other people driving close to you because the speeding driver will just pass you on the left.

Some day your speeding will cause the death of someone you may or may not know. Bla bla bla the rest of your post.

I am not teaching anyone anything. I am just driving. The guy that recklessly passes me on the left is endangering everyone else, not me.

it is against the law to remain in the fast lane - you cannot constantly be overtaking people so your argument holds no water
