Why does Telkom automated switchboard ask for my telephone number?

They never make use of it, as the person i speak to ALWAYS asks for the number again. I am forced to listen to a terribly dreary repetition of my number for no apparent reason. Are they trying to purposefully annoy their customers before they even speak to them. I have asked Telkom staff on numerous occasions, but no-one can answer me. They all say that the system does not pass the number over to them. Again, what's the point? Surely as they are THE telecommunications company in SA, they should have the technology to automatically recognise my number. After all, I am calling them on THEIR network.....

....amused and perplexed

They ask me every time for number. Why does the computer-lady need it, if the human-drone is going to ask again?

LoL. you would think a billion rand company can get the basics right.

this too has grinded my nuts for a loooong time. i even got into a fight with the person on the end of the line refusing to provide my phone. no. because i already punched it in twice.

Normally the computer generated prompt is to direct you to the correct call centre. In the past there were call centres in most major cities and you'd be directed to an operator in the city closest to you. Then the operator would take your number as the calls are recorded once an operator takes your call.

Have always thought this is so retarded. Even if calls are redirected to different centres, if you punch in your number it should come up on the operators screen. Also, have they never heard of caller line identity? Anyhow, Telkom isn't the only company I've experienced this problem with though.

I wouldn't mind if there was a point to it.... it serves no purpose if the number does not get passed onto telephone support person and they have to ask it of me again.

If Telkom cant read your number there is ZERO chance of them reading your mind ;-)

Sometimes when i phone call centre they see my home number

so maybe its also to make sure you arent phishing a number?

probably why they keep asking what my address is also everytime

I will tell you one thing though. This "stay on the line to rate the service you received" feature has improved the call centres that use it. Don't think telkom uses it? But Vodacom and MC call centres have improved since adding the rating feature.

Why does Telkom automated switchboard ask for my telephone number?

'cos they can?

hehehehe!

so is it normal that they ask for your id number and address each time?

It is strange that when you cancel your line, then they can "see" if you are calling from it. They refused to cancel a line once, because I was not calling from it (already moved out, and forgot about the line).
