Why WhatsApp must be regulated in SA

Good point. Already on Cell C btw - ported when I decided to stop supporting Vodacom Super Rugby (among other things) with my huge monthly bill.

So by their logic any game that allows you to communicate with other players should also be regulated?

I imagine any service that manages to get real traction would come under fire from them.

That being said, I'm surprised WhatsApp hasn't come under fire from regulators in the USA
 
Innovate or die.
I'm so sick of big industry titans trying to ban or regulate new technologies and services because they failed to innovate. There are examples of this in most industries, new and old. On a positive note, people are slowly removing the dependency on these conglomerates with many new innovations giving the consumer the options to make, build, print etc. their own solutions.
 
To be honest, this is what Net neutrality is fighting against, and why people like EFF (No this one) are up in arms about SOPA and other international acts/treaties that the US of A wants to ram down our throats.

Cause its exactly what will happen if we lose net neutrality, people like MTN can charge/throttle for VoIP or texting and people like Mweb can charge extra for streaming.....

It will be a sad day when we have to purchase internet access than internet broadband.

The saddest part is that this is company CEO's saying this. Goes to show how out of touch they are with reality, but these are the people essentially leading these massive companies. Ag shame né.
 
maybe these CEO's spewing all this BS should start by regulating their big fat "performance" bonuses and their OOB charges, and then try to regulate WhatsApp etc.

They have shareholders looking at the dwindling profits due to loss of voice and SMS revenue. The biggest cause of this loss? WhatsApp. We all know this is just trying to make it tougher for WhatsApp to operate in SA and possibly even pull out of SA if it feels like too much hassle to operate here. This way, WhatsApp look like the bad guys and Vodascum the good(ish) guys, who abide by the law (in the light of day at least). The sad thing is, with our guavamint, they might actually get away with it too. With WhatsApp gone, people will move on to the next big thing. Which will get systematically chopped down as well due to the precedent set by whatever happens with WhatsApp.

As per my earlier post, I remarked that Vodascum should block WhatsApp and then they will really see whats up. This path they are on potentially removes WhatsApp for everyone, levelling the playing field for the mobile operators to start siphoning more money from us again.
