I am at a loss, as to how it is my loss, so maybe you should check your assumptions, and as I in no way represent JAWUG, I cannot comment on their loss, if that is what you are refering too, but I seriously doubt that they have a need, for "deadwood" in their membership, ...

The more the merrier...deadwood makes good fires tho....

To answer the questions that came up:

Regarding where I live:

We have a situation where we have the rest of the board of trustees who think the old fogies are doing such a "fantastic job" and therefore I have been unable to get them voted out in all the AGMs I have been to. I have therefore decided to admit defeat and put the house on the market and see if I can get it sold. I have had, on two occasions, to get lawyers involved because these people do not know the Sectional Title Act and are actively trying to get rid of me at every turn. It costs me a packet in legal fees and I cannot carry on throwing money at a situation that will simply never change!

Regarding JAWUG:

I was prepared to get involved as far back as 2005, but, considering the treatment I got from a number of people involved I decided it is not worth my while. Furthermore, I am not about to open my network to yet another entry point for possible hackers, it is hard enough keeping the bastards out that try to get in via my ADSL line and waste enormous amounts of my time with denial-of-service and dictionary attacks on my mail server. Since I generally do not trust most people in this country, it is a risk I am not worth taking, unless I got to know each person on the WUG personally, which, logistically and timewise, is not possible.

Thanks for explaining your situation to us. It is unfortunate that you feel so paranoid about the people on the Jawug network.
Maybe next time then?

Just make sure your new place have decent LOS.
Get a mikrotik router + firewall! Get 2 firewalls. and if you really wanna feel safe, get 3... :D

Even with the amount of hacker-experience available on the Wug, they normally seem happy if you just share your desperate housewife stuff... (via secure method's of course) :D

OUCH!! not a nice situation, and if you have time, you can really wind them up ... , but you need time and the inclination

With the next place, check their rules, balance sheet, and last few years AGM minutes ... etc. before you decide to buy ...

Well, if you don't trust folks that much, a good firewall helps a great deal, but you could also have only a single "WUG" box rigged up that does not connect to anything else, except when you plug in your laptop, or you can just move data from it to any other, using an external USB HDD, till you feel more comfortable.

Being careful is wise, being paranoid is counter-productive and extremely limiting ... , not using a MicroSoft OS, also helps limit exposure ...:D

There's is still more "hackers" on the internet than on the wug. The wug community is minuscule compared to the internet community.

Besides, one knows where to go and visit to voice one's disapproval, should someone misbehave ...
