Why you should join Jawug?

Yes, this is yet another one of my “Join Jawug” threads :D

Apologies, but I cannot help myself from punting Jawug, and wugs in general.

I do not get commission, free biscuits, brownie points, or anything at all from doing this... My ONLY reasons are to make more people aware of this fantastic hobby.

Do you want to part of a community of intelligent like-minded individuals, who are always willing to help a friend out, answer that pc related question, help with that line of code you may be battling with? Assist with that linux server you want to install, configure that troublesome mail server once and for all?

These are some of the things that we do daily.. We are a group of guys, in the IT industry (most of us anyway) spread across many many different fields, from Software engineers, to Hardware boffins, to Linux guru’s, to ISP’s to coders, to developers, to gamers to dba’s... You name it.

Imagine being part of a commnity where you will always find someone who can help you with your problem. Imagine someone being there to answer that nagging question about linux / firewalls / routing / whatever

I have learned so much since I have joined. I have also been able to pass on my knowledge, and help countless others. I have made many friends, who are interested in the same kind of things that I am....

Phew... I have not even gotten to the wifi bit yet :D

The only negative thing I can think of, when joining your local wug, is that your social / personal / romantic parts of your life may suffer (a little) because of all of the time you are gonna be spending on your roof / in irc / installing that game server / helping more people to get connected....

I am so into this, I wanna “wug” my dogs, my kids, my car, my budgie....

I have five active wireless links on my roof as I type this, allowing several people from different areas to connect via my house, to access the rest of the network. If I could, I would have thirty links on my roof.

So stop reading my ramblings, and get yourself into our irc channel... Come join our community, come get the “better connection”, come join our community!

Uncle Wug needs you! :D

You have just hit one of the (many) nails on the head!

COD4? COH? CSS? QUAKE3? TF2? HL2? DOTA? name it! and if its not there, come host it yourself!

We have a large group of gamers, who play almost every night. We have QoS in place to sort out the downloaders from the gamers....

Its an ideal hobby! :)

WOW. I'm IN. i'll check whether or not i will be able to handle the setup myself, otherwise i'll get a buddy on IRC to help me out, where in turn I can help all my friends out.

Hehe...I'm not telling them untill I get my Setup done, then gonna shock them when I "invite" them over....

I can't believe such a great thing exists and this is the first time i have ever heard of it.... Ryder, we need to get more ppl man - how we gonna spread the word??

Once you are connected, and realise how amazing it actually is, you'll be giving out pamphlets at street corners, shouting from the highest mountain, changing your signature, covering your car in magnetic Jawug stickers!! You'll see!!!!

Hmm..the Jawug Stickers sounds good - I work as a Graphics Designer for a signage company - can do nice vinyl cutouts quick quick!:p

Maybe one on my back window:

"Jawug"
" The Largest Free Network in SA! "
" visit www.jawug.za.net for info "

I have been wondering when something like this will come along - Imagine how cool it's gonna be within a year or so? this thing is gonna get HUGE!

I mean, who would NOT wanna be appart of a permanent, Free and large Network? R1500 is nothing for what you get.

The Most important thing is that the Introduction/Tutorial on the webiste must be clear and simple. will give my comments as soon as I study them...

Adios!

Yeah, the introduction/tutorial needs a bit of a revamp, yet another one of those things to get sorted!

Yep - I was just looking at the website (Couldn't wait...LOL) and from the first sight I thought to myself "I'm gonna make this site cool!"

Don't worry, I'll do it as soon as I'm connected!

You'll probably be able to connect, and join! (But you would probably not be in a position to "re-transmit" the signal for others around you)

We prefer that you have something on your roof, running standard mikrotik preferably - It makes it easier to manage, easier to configure etc...

I still run several links using Linksys routers with openwrt/freifunk/dd-wrt too, but you will see the benefits of the standard equipment once you get an idea of how it all works...

This kit does not have to be specialised btw, you could get away with an old Pentium2 box inside your roof, with some radio cards installed, and some antenna on your roof!

There are many ways to do it, but the standard wifi enabled dsl routers, and pc/laptop installed wifi cards are very tricky to get going etc...

Come chat, and we'll answer any questions you may have!

Recommended would be a Mikrotik Routerboard running the Mikrotik OS.

They are fantastic units, easy to install and manage, and you can expand as well (add additional radios, add daughterboards allowing even more radios etc)

Most of the people that started out with Linksys units (as fantastic as they are) have all since moved into Routerboards!

3 LAN Ports? I just need 1.

That thing looks expensive, LOL.

I think i'll start with the Linksys like most of the newbie's and upgrade later... but i'll check the prices / setup and see if it will change my mind.

Not that expensive... you can get one for R650 or so... same price as a Linksys!

I bought a R1700 one the other day for R100 :D and it will be "activated" on the network shortly (at a member who wishes to upgrade to four seperate links)
