Why you should join Jawug?

Where can we buy this stuff? Only at online shops I Suppose?

Are there any PC Shops that sell Wifi Equipment?

There are lots of places where you can buy wifi kit, but we do have relationships with some of the better suppliers, and we do get better pricing than the man in the street...

Something to bear in mind regarding the Linksys... It only supports 2.4ghz frequency, and some of our sites utilise the 5.8ghz frequency.... The routerboard radios we use are software changeable between the different frequencies...

You may find that the only Jawug signal you can pickup from home is 5.8ghz (then the 2.4ghz Linksys wont help you) - Yet another benefit of the Routerboards over the Accesspoints....

Okay.
1) Take the Linksys stuff off the Site, I though that would be good enough...

You should also maybe look into putting an area on the site where you can find guys to supply, and install this stuff. some guys could actually make some extra cash on the side.. I would love it if someone could help me when I get started cause I don't even have an idea where that Routerboard goes! (In your PC? Probably not...LOL)

We tend not to charge for our services, and (time depending) are available to assist with installations, but part of the fun is doing it yourself! Many of our newer members were unsure of what to do, where to attach things, but after some question/answer sessions, they installed their own equipment!

The routerboard would normally go inside a suitable weatherproof enclosure on your roof, getting its LAN, and power all from the lan cable using POE (Power Over Ethernet), with the external antennas connected into "pigtails" that connect to the radios inside.

Its pretty easy stuff to be honest, and you'll get that sense of accomplishment when you install your own kit! Go have a look at the User Installations galleries (across all wugs) at www.wug.za.net/gallery !

The more i hear about WUGs the more keen i get. PEWUG was started just the other month and is growing nicely. Unfortunately i'm saving for a wedding, and will be moving soon so i'll only join the PEWUG later this year :(

Can't wait!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait (on your behalf) - Post back here once u are up and running, and "preach the gospel" to the non-connected! :D

The more I look at the gallery pics the more discouraged I get... I see voltmeters and a crapload of cables....

All I wanna do is LAN...

I'm more of a Software Guy than a Hardware Guy...
But If I do it by myself, I will atleast learn a lot...

Looks like i'm gonna havta join the IRC Crowd for this one.

Yea me too! ;)

I actually already have my Mikrotik routerboard thingamajobbie up on the roof all ready and what not.. But I'll only be able to connect once the next 2 planned links get up and running.. :)

Yea, I can't wait either! :)

Ryder,

it says on the site:

"Open the file up in google earth and see where the closest active node near you. In order to connect you must have LOS (Line of sight) to the point. If you are unsure if you have LOS you can get a rough estimate from the Line of Sight calculator on the WugPlotter menu"

What is the icon for an "active node" ?

There is a key explaining the different nodes on the download kml file page!

So, if I don't fall underneath a red / yellow beam i'm basically screwed?

Those beams are just a guesstimate really.. Nothing is ever certain with Wifi range, but if you can "see" that node you wish to connect to, even if its 40kms away, you'll most likely be ok...

Also, the person you may wish to connect to, may be willing to install additional equipment for you on his roof... You can also finance more equipment to install at other people... Believe me, where there is a wug, there is a way! :)

ok...will discuss this with some guys on IRC when I get home - thanx Ryder, u were a great help on Info!
