Photo of Sircastle4 and Scan

I need to determine antenna type. Google Earth calcs that I am 1.3kms from Sircastle4 and I have line of Sight to it from my balcony. Would a Grid not be an overkill. I will be hooking it up to a Wrt54G. What recommendations on antenna. As I can See Sircastle, I have not done a line of site calc on wug.za.net

Scans pick up the MAC addy as MAC addy xx xx xx xx 9E BA

See Link of Photo from Balcony http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/7592/ppuser/8886

See Scan Results using Netstumbler with standard laptop with Wireless enabled. http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/7432/ppuser/8886

Stay away from the WRT54's. They are almost the same price as a Mikrotik Routerboard, and not nearly as powerful. (or as many features or as well supported)

If you can, come talk on the irc @ wug.za.net

Recommended kit is the RB433 + grid + radio + cables. I won;t say the grid is a overkill, the better the signal , the better the speed.

WUG Kit

Greetings,

I have recently purchased the kit and connect to the WUG network (some tell me i might have marital problems from now on)

I have a question regarding the position of the grid and routerboard and problems with lightning. Last year i went through 4 dsl modems, 2 nics, and 1 alarm system. I am in the process of putting in surge arrestors etc, but also anything that we should be doing on the aerials where the grid and routers are connected to?

Thanks
AKA Saint on the WUG network.

Heya Saint,

Why don't you come on IRC and chat to the guys online?

Personally (well, at my parents house), LOS is perfect from below the roof level. So I've installed the antennas as low as possible. Hopefully, the trees will get hit first :p
But you also have to make sure you've grounded your pole properly.
To date, this has worked for me, but there are some others out there that haven't been so lucky...

Regarding lightning....

I have been a Proud Jawug member for probably close on four years now, and in all that time, I have never lost any equipment - yes, I have had "issues", but these issues would be limited to losing one port on a 4port Linksys, or perhaps a port on a switch. I have been very very lucky! Trust me when I say I have enough on the roof currently to be worried about too! There are four seperate routers, and six antenna on/in my roof as I type this!

If you are really stressed about lightning, make sure that pole is grounded nicely, and if at all possible, unplug the equipment (from both power, and from antenna)

I used to unplug in the early days, but don't even stress about it these days to be honest... and I am running a 48u cabinet full of goodies too! ;]

Regarding Jawug

I never really got a friendly response from any of you guys ever, so my position has always been why bother.

Furthermore, living in a townhouse complex with two Old-Age-Home avoiders (read: pushy old people on the board of trustees) any sort of mast is going to cause problems.

As it is they have an issue with the DSTV dish I put on the wall

Get to-gether with the other owners, and vote in "new" more reasonable trustee's at the next AGM, if you arn't prepared to participate, don't complain. :)

Unfortunately the reality of life is that WUG's will always be a breeding ground for elitest pricks who like to run things because they are desperate to put something on their CV to save their career. And by elitest pricks, I mean school kids and exchange admin sorts who managed to plug in a WRT and configure some static routing.

People with half a clue don't have the time to join committees and go to AGM's, the rest mask their stupidity by pretending to be better than you. Don't confuse the arrogance of JAWUG MANCOM morons with possessing an IQ over 100.

What I can suggest is spot the people who do have clue and approach or seek them out privately.

No better reason to join, then by participating you can change the things you are not happy with, and improve those that you are happy with.

But to me, you sound like that all too common "prick" known as a free loader/lame user etc. ... <shrug>

Hey guys, I finally have all the gear but now I see that most people are using 5ghz. I am using some 2.4ghz gear that I "salvaged" and it means that I can't connect to anyone :/

Ryder... how about some 2.4 connections on NC so I can connect ?

It's that inference which ensures I will never connect to JAWUG. And it's your loss...

You don't have time/inclination to attend AGM's, that occur only, once a year, and last 2 hours +/-, it is too much effort to register, so that even if you have a valid reason for not being able to attend the AGM, you can hand in a proxy with instructions on how to cast your vote on each and every item on the agenda ... , and in so doing enable the "change" you desire ...

Nope, you rather stand on the side lines and criticise, moan, groan, bitch and shout the odds, wasting your "precious" time, and every one else's, to no avail ... , that seems to appeal to you, more, than participating and doing something for yourself and others ...

But then it takes all types to make a world, ... <sigh>

I am at a loss, as to how it is my loss, so maybe you should check your assumptions, and as I in no way represent JAWUG, I cannot comment on their loss, if that is what you are refering too, but I seriously doubt that they have a need, for "deadwood" in their membership, ...
