Looking to Connect

I can see Sircastle2 from a laptop running Network Stumbler.
Must admit it is a very week signal, but a nice Anntena (I presume a flat panel or Yagi) should do on my WRT54g with the tomato firmware Wireless Survey facility. How do I determine which type of antenna to use.

I am off Doreen Road on the Mountain side (Amarosa/Ruimsig). I am registered on wugsa as Toby

I am a bit unsure on what I would actually need.

RouterBoard. Does this plug into a seperate dedicated PC as in PCI, or is it a seperate Discrete Board that mounts in a waterproof casing. Does it have firewalling capabilities, or must I run an IPCOP/Smoothwall behind it.

Where can I purchase RouterBoard. An Contacts and way of getting a Jawug special price.

At what point do I get an IP address and Authentication/logon assigned, or do I first prove that I can connect via DHCP. Does Sircastle2 unlock my MAC from my routerboard and then everything behind then allowed across WAN, or do I get a Subnet assigned (I presume somewhere on 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.0.0 range)

Any other pointers will be appreciated

One last point, I was on IRC talking to some people for 5 minutes, now cannot get on again. Is something wrong with Jawug IRC.

The Routerboard (Recommended) but not essential, is a seperate standalone board that should be mounted in a weatherproof enclosure on your roof, and powered via POE. Depending on the model you choose, it can handle several different radios at the same time. It is also able to do either 2.4ghz or 5.8ghz (antenna/radio) dependant.

The network is wide open to make it easy for newcomers to join, we recommend locking down your own home network (an ipcop/smoothwall/pfsense box may be used) or you can utilise the firewall/nat features on the Routerboard. The best way would be to have a dedicated firewall box, handling your wug/adsl/lan all in one. We will assign IP's once you are able to connect.

The linksys WRT54GL can be used as well...

Come speak to us on IRC (The irc server has had some maintenance performed today, but should be cool now)

Ok, I am also keen on this. So I registered, got line of sight with a active node. Now the hardware install is no problem at all, but I will need some assistance with the software setup perhaps, can I configure a Linux server to administer my local lan as well as the WUG? IC there is no WUG for the Strand, Cape Town area as such, I connect to Somerset West.

You can config the Mikrotik to do the wug/lan/internet side, or go for an ipcop/smoothie/pfsense box also...

Suggest you chat to the okes at http://www.ctwug.za.net - Not sure what the current situation is in the Cape myself!

Experiment with Link

Before jumping in with a RouterBoard, I would like to try connecting with my WRT54G, to make sure that I can connect with a good signal. It is a Version 3.1 - What Firmware / Software would be recommended with a WRT for Jawug. It currently has the latest version of Tomato on it.

I wanted to join Jawug but it seemed too damn complicated.

Its a specially designed test! If you can get through the initial stages, we know you are wugworthy, and can pass on the wug gene to fellow interested wuggers!

Seriously, where did you have problems?

Yo Ryder - Remember me?

I didn't have LOS to anything or Anyone about a month ago but now someone close to me is opperational!

I have checked and I stay 0.8 km from him and have LOS! I'm so glad :p does this mean I can connect through him?
