Will my North American device work on this network?

Hey All!

Flyin down in about 2 weeks time, so im trying to get all my ducks in a row and make sure ill be connected. Ill be in durban in the Park Hill and Glenn Ashley area. From what i can see from the coverage map, I should be able to get 3g. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out a few things...

-I have a T-mobile variant of the Galaxy Note II. Its GSM Quad-band: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz UMTS: Band I ,band II, Band IV (Dual-band1700/2100 MHz), Band V....
Am i safe to assume that my phone will get HSPA on this network? from my research, its a 1800/2100, but im assuming that 2100 is your HSDPA and 1800 is GSM?

-Whats the speed like in durban? how bout south africa as a whole? ill probably be in johannesburg and/or capetown as well.

As far as speed goes, it varies quite a bit but you should get between 1 - 8 mpbs on 3G.

3G reception is generally good on all our networks in any of our major cities so you shouldn't have any difficulties getting online.

2G (GRPS/EDGE) it will work with any network.
3g (UMTS) your device supports Band I (IMT), is required for Vodacom, MTN and 8ta, but not Cell C. For Cell C you need device supporting Band VIII (900MHz). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
Check network coverage on local Web site.
 
cool, thanks for the replies! I was planning on getting a sim when i got there and a local PAYG plan for between 3-6gigs. I was doing a bit of research beforehand and i was sure about 8ta, but i wasnt sure if it would work on vodacom or mtn. But good to know they'd work on all 3. Between 8ta, vodacom and MTN, what would people suggest? Relatively speaking, price isnt much of an issue, im more concerned with quality of service.
 
You need to make sure that your phone is not network-locked by your network.

I am not sure about N-A, but do know that in the UK some phones are locked, all depending on the contract.
 
oh yea.... 10 hour time difference... its 9pm here.

one last question...do networks issue Micro SIMS or the regular large version?
If the large one, ill just know to pack my sim punch with me ;)

Networks here have standard size, micro, and nano sims.

They may even have sim punches of their own. ;)
