Hi D

The 2 major WiMAX suppliers are Telkom and Screamer

Telkoms connections are limited to 512 k and Screamer are provided at client request up to 2Mgb/s.

With Telkom you can use any ADSL ISP for your broadband and Screamer supplies its own broadband.

But unfortunately you dont have

Is there any way that you can give me a thumb-suck guesstimate of time before my area will have coverage ?

Hmmm - you conveniently forgot to mention the iBurst/Vodacom WiMax network. As I understand it they already have the biggest number of basestations and they are still only in their early rollout

I-Burst a blood vessel last time i did business with them. They will never see a cent from me, even if they are THE aura and holy shrine of all wireless in the world.

Not conveniently, deliberately.

There is a lot more to being a credible WiMAX network operator than having a few base stations, (not the biggest number of base stations).

But then I might be biased so... http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=175862

iBurst/Vodacom have deliberately priced themselves out of the residential Wimax market. If you're outside of the Gauteng area, your only real option for Wimax is Telkom.

Screamer, when are you going to be in Cape Town???

1: What will the implications be if i only want/need the WiMAX service for " lets say" 3 months ?

2: Can i downgrade at any time ? " what cost implication are there on this"

Hi there

We have no time based clauses in our contracts except that we require 30 days notice for any cancellation, downgrade or upgrade. So if you only need the service for 3 months I suggest you rent the CPE and give notice at the end of the 2nd month.

There are no penalty costs for a downgrade.

I am afraid to answer this question because our management won't give me a definitive answer. They have acquired high sites but won't promise any switch on dates.

So based on one complaint you are saying that the iB/VC network is not a legitimate network  have you read all the complaints leveled at Screamer on this forum?

I was very happy with the performance of my WiMax link when I was testing their service in the early days of their rollout.

If you can back up you assertions about your competitors with KPIs then I am all ears. If all you can do is slag them off in a public forum then you have lost my attention.

Good grief, you seem a little touchy about iBurst. Any reason;)

If you read my e-mail correctly I did not "slag them off" and pointed out that any feelings I had to iBurst WiMAX was purely an opinion.

You will note that Screamer has been completely turned around so any complaints, which require a refund of service, are really ancient.

Are you still using iBurst WiMAX??

I agree, Iburts Wimax is way to expensive. And then you still have to explain to then what Wimax is. I requested Wimax from Iburst before I went the Screamer route...

Screamer took 2 days and then I was connected, but Telkom gets my vote, because of the fact that you can use any ISP. Installation just takes a lot longer. :(

Yes, my personal experience with Screamer is also that their responsiveness and quick installation time was really excellent. But you also need to have a good look at pricing as the Screamer's bandwith is pretty expensive and with Telkom you can get much cheaper bandwith with some of the smaller ISPs.

I did read on another thread that Telkom is not installing anymore WiMax - but I haven't seen any official information, so don't know if it just speculation.

Hi Borrels

I would like some assistance in working out how much more expensive we are than using a Telkom WiMAX or ADSL connection with another ISP’s bandwidth.

A Telkom 512 Wimax connection costs R240 monthly.

A Telkom 512 ADSL connection costs R 326 and the line connection costs R124.20 (Total R450.20)

Axxess ‘s (for example) prices for unshaped, Fibre, broadband are: 1G for R99, 3G for R299, 5G for R499 and 10G for R999.

Together with Telkom’s connection fees this compares to Screamer’s prices as follows:

Package Telkom WiMax+Axxess
1 Gig 339.00
3 Gig 539.00
5 Gig 739.00
10 Gig 1239.00

Telkom ADSL+Axxess
1 Gig 549.20
3 Gig 749.20
5 Gig 949.20
10 Gig 1449.20

Screamer
1 Gig 190.00
3 Gig 420.00
5 Gig 570.00
10 Gig 1025.00

In addition we also provision our 5G and 10 G packages with 1Mg or 2Mg connections on request at no additional cost.

Are there Fibre, unshaped broadband packages that I don’t know about that you can use with Telkom that makes them cheaper than Screamer?

SharkBait pointed it out in his post. I was referring to the difference in bandwith prices e.g. Screamer 1 Gig = R190, Axxess 1 Gig = R99.

The advantage of using Telkom WiMax is that you can choose an ISP and package that suits your needs e.g. local only or uncapped or shaped or whatever. I didn't imply that Telkom is better, just pointing out the differences in the offerings which I think will help WiMax noobs.

Yeah, I did mention to howzit as well that demand for local only BW is growing. Windows updates, drivers, linux distros etc is all stuff available to download with local BW. I mean, Vista 64bit SP2 is already 700mb odd and if you only have 1gig BW a month... ouch. :D
