So what if they develop something and give it away for free. And I don't know why other companies would spend millions on something they are going to give away for free as well.

My question has still not been answered....does Safari ship with Mac OSX??

Cos if it does....sue their asses! The EU Commission is gonna get mega rich from this.

Why couldn't Microsoft offer their browser for free and NOT bundled it? Being free wasn't the reason everyone eventually used it, Netscape (a far superior browser then) shortly offered theirs for free afterwards.

Why should they NOT bundle it? You don't have to use it. There's NO reason why they should promote other browsers together with IE. Anyone that knows anything can use another browser than IE. I mean, even on Google.Com there's a link to download Chrome. Apple Safari installs itself automatically when you update Quicktime. I don't see people pissing about that. Don't like IE? Don't use it.

Personally, I think its stupid - Its an MS operating system, so why couldn't it be shipped with an MS browser.

There are people in rural parts that still use 56k modems - sure they're going to love downloading a browser.

They will be bundled by OEMs. The difference is that now the OEM is making the choice or offering a selection of browsers and NOT the Operating System maker. You buy a PC from HP, Dell, whoever - even some small one-man outfit who will install a browser for you or offer you a selection. That's how it will work. Grandma will get her browser, in the same way she gets Nero Basic, Norton AV 30 day trial and WinDVD OEM edition with her new PC.

I suppose - just seems like a huge fuss over nothing.

Don't see everyone making a fuss over car manufactures building the radio's, etc into the dash these days.

Having IE there already, means you're less likely, being a novice user especially, want to download another browser. After all, you already have ONE browser, why bother.

Here the OEM either installs one or a few for you OR offers you a choice and asks which one you want. To me this seems more fair.

Google - it's not like opening Google.com installs Chrome as the default browser. Installing Windoze installs IE as the default browser.

Who's fussing? The EU sued MS. MS lost. MS now had to unbundle IE or get the heck out of Europe. They chose to unbundle IE. For the end user the whole process will be transparent.

Because a browser has NOTHING to do with the operating system. They used one monopoly to create another one. It's like bundling Office with Windows and then pushing bribes to get sellers to sell Windows instead of alternatives.

MS was originally guilty of forcing OEMs to NOT Bundle alternative browsers and not bundle alternative OSes. They gave special OEM Windows discounts to OEMs who would not offer MS Windows alternatives. So if you went to IC you could ONLY buy Windows machines, no others. On top of that MS forced you to use IE by default.
On top of that IE broke many HTML conventions and since MS also sells Web Page creation software and web server software - that gave them a further advantage - people now would need to by Front Page or MS could license out their variations of code - so that pages were sure to work on MS IE. The user got IE and because IE did not have to compete - MS became lax in updating their browser - which lagged behind in features and security.

Apple sell one product. MS is not an OEM. They don't sell ONE COMPUTER.
If they did and called it the Microsoft Computer, sure, I'm sure they could.

MS sells OS for all PCs. However MS also used that to create new monopolies for itself in areas it made software too - namely IE. Early versions of MS Office also used some hidden Windows features which meant Office loaded faster than WordPerfect or AmiPro.
