Windows 8 may make Microsoft cool again

Wait so developing apps for windows 8 is very easy, does it explain it in that keynote?

Got a link for that keynote, where is this keynote you guys are speaking about?

Dude, you MUST watch the entire Keynote. It's on the front-page of http://www.buildwindows.com/
It's almost like they're trying to replicate the typical Apple keynotes, but they suck at it. It doesn't matter though, since the technology speaks for itself.

**** open source. THIS is what you get when the biggest OS software company in the world gets pushed around and subsequently gathers the best minds and ideas to deliver what can only be described as "fitting" to most people. I love it.

NOW I know its going to bloody storm nevermind rain !!!!!

Microsoft has finally included a bootloader where you can select different OS's

And yes it looks like the Metro UI as well :)

So then this should be relatively easy to install alongside an existing Windows 7 install in a dual boot config?

Well I found it by accident and dont see any way of editing it*, so I would strongly advise only to use this on Dev edition if you dont care about losing your data. In final release I would say yep try it.

I can see why they release it to developers, I have yet to find a normal Win 7 app that works.... Guess I know what we doing for the next few months, at least the Visual Dev rocks and makes things super easy.

*I have 2 Hardrives in my laptop and selected the wrong one to clear and install Win 8 on. Only when I was actively watching the boot process after a hard reset now I noticed the Pastel Blue Metro screen listing the boot options.

Edit: Oh Crap it removed my Windows Loader Hack on Windows 7 now I have to phone Microsoft to activate my dam license. I hate doing this as its a dev laptop and gets reloaded so often its not even funny.

Ja, that's painful for a layman like me. Puts me right off!!

No need to dude. Get your notebook setup just as you like it, then system image it. When time comes for a reload, restore the system image. Saves a tremendous amount of time.

I download it this afternoon, created a Usb boot disk from the ISO and installed it on my 10.1" Atom tablet. NICE. Does need work but to be expected. Loving what I am seeing.
Tomorrow I will start to fiddle with the dev tools. Dying to see what my future looks like (full-time .Net contractor) :)

They have done exactly that.

Good move by MS there. As for the 'fantastic dev tools', those have been avaliable for some time. Monodroid, Adobe AIR/Flex, etc. Cross platform development - write once deploy many.

Once again, MS will likely develop tools that allow you to create software for WINDOZE ONLY.

They did, even the HTML5 they use on Metro you can not reuse on other platforms, even worse the XAML that Metro use can not be copied onto their own phones.

I LOLed just now at this pic: http://i.imgur.com/vd2WA.jpg

Because it feels very true... now on Day 2 of Wndows 8

windows8didntshow.jpg

Long Zheng from istartedsomething.com have (sic) deciphered some of the “Few things we did’nt get to show” Sinofsky flashing at the BUILD keynote yesterday.

They include:
• Integrated load balancing – if you have multiple active network connections, Windows 8 will intelligently balance the network traffic between them for performance
• Stereo 3D video and gaming – would suggest native support for stereoscopic display output too
• Easy discover apps that support a language – would suggest Windows Store will allow browsing by language
• Filter apps that are accessible – similar to above, for applications that are accessible
• Start background – there will be the ability to change the Start background (not possible in developer preview)
• Create Live ID in Windows OOBE – users without Live IDs will be able to create one at the Windows setup
• Phone as Smartcard – the ability to use Windows Phone as an authenticator for login?
• Communication over SMS on my PC – the ability to send and receive SMSes?
• Native support for WIMAX and LTE

• Create Live ID in Windows OOBE – users without Live IDs will be able to create one at the Windows setup

Talking about Live ID, Windows 8 now has a build in Sync that works across different pc's. So it makes sence that they have to include that into the installation.

If you log into windows using your Microsoft Live ID it syncs data to the cloud as seen bellow in the Control panel.

More than 500 000 downloads of the 3GB Win8 dev-preview in 12 hours. No wonder the web is creaking.

Doesn't mean it is good, just that everyone wants to see what the fuss is about. Personally I can see how I would like this for a tablet I would even say it kicks Honeycomb's backside.... the more I use it as a "desktop" the more I hate the Metro UI for normal PC use.

It will be interesting to see how much of the traditional desktop experience Microsoft finally cut from their tablet version.

Their metro UI is definitely a step in the right direction.

Of course.
Lots of excitement, though, even though it's early early days - Dev-Monkeyman Ballmer said "Windows 8 still has a very long way to go".

The problem with releasing stuff this early is that end-user get hold of it and start moaning about all the things that don't work - they don't understand it's not even feature-complete, or that many elements are not yet baked into the early builds.
