Do you have .Net Framework installed? It's the same as on 7, you need to add it through Control Panel, Programs & Features, Add or Remove Windows Features, Dotnet 2.0 & 3.0 (it's one selection for both).

Many apps don't use 4.0 yet, so just check if it is active. I had to activate it today, because I needed to install a Vodafone modem.

Yep. All there and active.
 
Ok so I had a look at the problem and the problem is solved for me at least. :D

I made a batch file which runs once a week on a Friday after work.

"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide -update

This will do the update without defender actually opening on screen.

O yeah to access Task Scheduler in Windows 8
(Windows+R) To open Run
Taskschd.msc

You could also run the batch file from a desktop shortcut if you don't wanna schedule it.


edit: O yeah my Windows updates is still switched of and it works like a dream.

Yes, I am very happy with my 7 media centre build and not happy about the forced upgrade to use my free media pack key.

If you've never seen "device is busy" when trying to unmount something then you're one lucky dude. I've gotten the message very often from win 7 and linux on different systems and with different devices. It's just a part of the "experience" of having a PC. So even though it's a small thing it's almost joyous how win 8 (for me at least) dismounts right away every time.

I recently built my new PC, had same problem but that was due to lack of power from the main-board to the front USB, switched ports and now dismounts every-time on my windows 7 build. Not an OS problem actually, usually hardware.

Found the cause of my .Net Framework pest: Vodafone's MobileBroadband software. Not happy with latest Windows 8 update. Uninstalled it.
 
I love the new Windows Explorer redesign. That to me is the best thing about Win8.

There are some good changes to Windows Explorer and the way multiple moving of files work, etc. For sure some improvements in there. Modern UI, unfortunately, no matter how hard I try to get along with it, sux. It feels like we have moved more than a decade back in Windows UI design. Large tiles with large icons filling up a screen ... Windows 3.1 in a new dress kind of thing. It is retarded. Maybe I'm just too stupid to get it.

No man we're agreed on Modern UI. It's completely pointless for desktop use. The biggest travesty is that they had the gall to wedge it into Server 8. Like did they even do a quick head count of departmental sysadmins to see if any of them wanted a touch interface in their OS?

Windows 8 is a tablet OS, not a desktop OS.

Microsoft is only now going through the pains, Google went through with Android Honeycomb.

Like a few mentioned before, Microsoft misfires with every release after a really great release, but then somehow fixes it with the next release.

*I'm sure Windows 8 will actually be ok on the new Surface tablets, just don't bring it anywhere near my Windows 7 desktop.

I was smitten with metro in the beginning, but now I click desktop straight away and never look back. Thinking of reverting back to win7.

Apparently you'll be thankful when you use a tablet, just a pity its the same on desktop.

The problem with the tablet version is you STILL have to deal with desktop mode for a lot of features which is totally unsuited for touch - look at Marco Ament's review of it, or see some of the videos. So this hybrid OS model is a no-win, it doesn't matter which type of hardware you use, you end up losing on one end of the spectrum.

I'm not surprised... Windows Me, Vista come to mind... they're either going to get it right with a bunch of updates or they're going to release a sequel soon with all the feedback from early adopters IMO.

Aero looks much nicer on my desktop. ;)

The only thing Windows 8 does well, is to remind you what a brilliant OS Windows 7 really is. :love:

How does one 'fix' such a fundamentally broken concept? It's not like one can tweak parameters or glossy up the windows a bit. It's already plenty fast enough. I remember when the iPad first came out people were saying that iOS was too simplified for tablets and they should have dressed down OSX for touch. Now we can see what that really looks like, and it isn't pretty.
