Correction... Win 98 SE was the absolute best of it's kind. Windows 2000 couldn't hold a candle to it for the home market. Nothing else ran the latest DirectX / OpenGL games.

Agree 100%. Few realise this. To have a touch friendly start screen does nothing to make all the software it starts touch friendly. To me this is such a frikkin mess. Are we now going to see developers making touch friendly software for all Windows applications? How long will that take? Years.

Tablets should remain tablets with light touch friendly apps. This idea of making a one size fits all device is not going to work for some time to come. My creative software (Corel Draw, PhotoPaint, and many others) is a mouse friendly working environment. To do photo editing on tablets usinf touch is easy, but not designing logos, etc. This I'm sure goes for many applications.

To me the idea of a touch driven Windows Pro tablet is nonsense. I prefer to keep my ultrabook and tablet seperate devices. That my non-touch ultrabook now has a touch friendly start screen irritates me. But, as Cerebus stated, there are other nice touches that I don't want to lose now by going back to Seven. I just wish - as I stated from the start - that MS would bring out a Classic version with no Modern UI, or one version but with the option to select not to use/install Modern UI. The Classic version should then also give us the Aero look options. I hate the flat Windows 95 look of Windows 8's desktop environment.
 
I think what we'll see is developers being mindful of Window's touch capabilities and developing more touch specific interfaces for existing software. The catch is that some devs might not see the need, especially if their software is not tablet / touch screen specific. It might all be decided based on the popularity of Windows tablets / hybrid / touch screen machines.
 
/me sitting on Windows 7 looks at all the funny people trying to get Windows 8 to work.

I gave up loooong ago when my old games refused to run.

Same here.
Metro and the few niggling details that don't seem to work is now getting on my nerves. I have it as a HTPC and have a nice big Samsung LCD tv as a second screen with a Compro remote. The HDMI connection keeps on giving errors and the Windows button on my remote works intermittently. Still waiting for windows 8 drivers for both to see if that fixes it.
Planning to move back to 7 in the interim.

Trouble is that people have been using mature touch devices for some time now and 8 is a let down in that department - it's neither here nor there IMO. I'm waiting if I can avoid 8.
 
I am also getting frustrated with Windows 8 on my work laptop and want to revert back to Windows 7.

The first few days after installation were particularly bad as every time I opened a picture / mp3 / video / pdf they would open with the modern application, you know the one that takes about 30 seconds to load on a core i5.

It is almost bearable now as I have just about bypassed modern / metro completely. Whats the point then? Also massively annoying that my bog standard HP 1018 doesnt have a Windows 8 driver...

Well that part is up for debate:

In 8 it fills a whole screen and needs mouse actions to jump between subsections but you using a keyboard to find something, this cause an extra action with a mouse.



In 7 its a small section that shows a summery that you can easily navigate using a keyboard only but this also makes the results page smaller

 
Installed 8 as a dual boot option, glad I did... not really impressed. Good for tablets but if I'm on my desktop why give me notifications like "tap here"?... fail.

Doesn't come close to Windows 7 as a desktop OS.

Pretty sure that'd be your hard drive, not your CPU causing the bottleneck.

Windows 8 made a lot of changes under the surface. It's not all about metro. Even if you choose to use W8 over W7 and install a start menu replacement, the upgrade is still worth it if you can get everything working the way you want it. The speed increase alone is very nice.

I can do it all with the keyboard.

The search on Windows 8 does seem more reliable as well. I don't see why the fact that it fills the screen really matters.

The dual personality thing in Windows 8 was a poor choice though. They should have dumped the desktop.

With some tweaking it can show that Windows 7 was rubbish and Windows 8 is great.
 
I'm using Windows 8 now with touch screen T410s Lenovo and I'm liking it. It has some niggles - like the menus in this forum not working well with touch screen, but otherwise fine. Happy so far.
