Windows 8 upgrade version conundrum

Would I be able to upgrade my 'illegitimate' copy of windows?

Once you have downloaded, and have saved as an ISO. What can you do with that ISO?

Can you burn it, FORMAT your ENTIRE pc and then install fresh win 8 from that DVD?

Im thinking not... :erm:

Found an easy solution for Afrihost customers wanting to upgrade to Win8!

Simply just change your account back to [email protected] when running upgrade assistant. The old IS account still works (as of today at least) and the MS sees you as a SA IP and bobs your uncle :-)

Yeah Iv'e tried that.. Not working for me hey!! I remember it from when they just moved to MTN! So I could play games online I had to change it...

and this???

Windows 8 System Builder

The Windows System Builder edition differs from previous full retail editions by the way the licensing works.
With the old previous full versions, Microsoft was much more lenient in license transferral, such a when installing a new motherboard or installing on a new computer. However, with the System Builder version, much like the copies provided with new computers, a Windows installation is limited to a single machine.

So you can only install your Windows 8 System Builder edition to a single machine as it is now licensed to the machine and not the user.
This means that should you purchase a new computer or change the core hardware such as the motherboard then you cannot re-install your Windows 8 System Builder edition.

As of the time of publishing the Windows 8 System Builder edition is not yet available

I refuse to buy a new copy of windows every time I do a hardware change. hell no!!!

oh hell no, you can only add the windows media pack to the pro version and not the normal 8 version. eish wena

That's the exact opposite of what was reported by ZDNet. See this explainer: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/software/63100-windows-8-versions-and-sa-pricing-explained.html

As I understand it, Microsoft has become *more* lenient with the system builder licenses.

Windows licenses that come with a PC still live and die with that machine. However, if you get an OEM/DSP/system builder license from a place like Esquire, Prophecy, Sybaritic, ComX, or the host of other sites being linked to in these threads then it comes with a personal use transfer clause.

From the ZDNet piece, quoting the system builder license agreement:

"You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs *to you*. … You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers."

I tried Ubuntu for about a month. There were many good points about it, but way too many negatives. I've appreciated Windows much more since moving back.

I was referring to the install/upgrade process :)

But yes it did take me a lot longer than a month to make the adjustment to Linux because I came from a Windows background (this was back in 2005)

I eventually made the switch over to Linux as my primary OS when I saw Windows Vista,
and only really use Windows to play games now.
At the moment I'm adjusting to using Unity in Ubuntu, as well as trying out other distros

Well Finally got my download GOING

I used my friends Telkom details just to complete the purchase part, which was still in Dollars but It allowed me to type a SA postal code in! I also got an email with my new Product Key

And as you can see I underlined the part where it says if you ever need to Download windows again you can do so with your product key!

This Cost me R135.00

Now the 2 Hour wait -_-

*edit*

Clicking the "here" button downloads a "Windows8-Setup.exe" file of 5.2Mb

Mense, and I thought I was confused yesterday ... I'm at least ~14.99 times more confused right now. The blame falls squarely on M$. I'm starting to think they don't want my money.

Then another thing guys: Do not forget to buy your copy of Windows Media Center otherwise you will not be able to play DVDs!

If you obtain Windows 8 Media Center Pack through any other location fees might apply. Offer valid from October 26, 2012, until January 31, 2013, and is limited to one product key per email address. You qualify for this promotion if your PC is running Windows 8 Pro. Additional hardware may be required to watch and record live TV. You must provide a valid email address to receive your Windows 8 Media Center Pack product key. Your product key must be activated no later than January 31, 2013. Microsoft will only contact you at the email address you provide to send you your product key and to remind you when the activation period for your product key is ending. Catalysis Corporation is a third-party company we use to collect subscription information and process the delivery of these emails. If you purchase a new PC with Windows 8 preinstalled and you later upgrade that PC with Windows 8 Pro Pack, Windows 8 Media Center Pack, a volume license edition, or a retail edition, you will no longer be able to install apps that are provided exclusively from your PC manufacturer through the Windows Store. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

I work retail IT and even the suppliers cannot give me straight answers as to what is going on. Micro$oft are ultimate poephols for making this so difficult. What's wrong with offering retail packs like always? You would expect that with people wanting to go legal or to purchase a new copy of Win 8 to upgrade from Linux or to Bootcamp with on their Macs that they would make it easily accessible? I have seen the look in the eyes of some of my customers when I tell them they need a licensed copy of XP, Vista or 7 to upgrade to 8 and let me tell you, it's like the look your dog gives you when it has pulled Christmas lunch off the table.

I honestly cannot blame people for slapping on an eye patch and yelling "Yo ho ho, tis the pirate's life for me" while finding the bountiful treasure that awaits them in hassle free land. Nice one Micro$oft, for inspiring people to go legal.

Tried it and works great THANKS!!!

I'm looking at buying a new PC in a couple of months (not for gaming) and if this Win8 **** is not sorted out I might just install my first Linux distro :/ This is 2012 and should not involve so much pain :(

If only I could do all my music production in Linux then I'd be a happier guy. Sadly the alternative means buying a Mac

I'll just have to lube up and take another one from M$

Yeah thats what I meant you should do! The VPN is only for the registration and purchase part!

Glad I could help!!

Haha thanks for this but, I got my product key for MC but I'm sure you will be able to watch DVD's without it using VLC!

If you still don't have/use VLC its time to move away from XP...
