Windows XP SP3 progress

Microsoft’s slow march to service pack 3 for Windows XP has continued as the company releases a refresh of its latest beta code. The new software follows February’s release of Windows XP SP3 RC2. The newest beta release, however, only adds the word ’refresh’ to the title instead of updating the RC version.

Installing it on a slow pc ( pre core2duo or am2 pc ) makes it react faster on start menu and desktop ops., I have seen it

It has to a degree added to the stability of XP after SP2 being installed. I noticed minor problems after installing but not serious at all. Logging in and out screens are out of sync with the process, but worth the improvements in speed when launching applications.

XP x64 might only cater for a niche market, but another service pack would be most welcome.

Just to add to this post...

With Service Pack 3 for Windows XP just over the horizon, there's an internal schedule for the release. As you can see in the list below, most of the stages will occur before the end of the month, though forced automatic updates won't land until June. - April 14, 2008: Support is available for the release version of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
- April 21, 2008: Original Equipment Manufacturers, Volume License, Connect, and MSDN and TechNet subscribers
- April 29, 2008: Microsoft Update, Windows Update, Download Center
- June 10, 2008: Automatic Updates

Already installed SP3 - found no issues except with the remote desktop client complaining that its evaluation period expired.

Is there a local download site for SP3? Can you just get a large executable or does it have to be done via automatic updates?

Telkom really poke us in the eye (and other places) with up-dates and downloads, managed to get a CD with it, yet to load it as I do musical stuff and have lots to get out the way - the start menu thing you can normally do with a tweek, must remember to look at that to see if they just tweeked it in the sp
