Wireless Gaming: Neotel

I get about 80ms to the COD4 servers with ADSL, so go figure.

The game is built to allow higher latencies than most, though. You don't notice any anomalous movement at 80ms.

For MMO's online I would honestly say that Shaped ADSL is the worst even worse than 3G.

Your probably say WTH are you talking about?

If you have a 3G connection go to Poynting.co.za and buy a proper antennae and point it to the closest tower, setup the correct APN for your profile and your ready to go. Expect ping's of between 240 and 340ms international.

I refuse to use shaped ADSL as it is the biggest load of hogwash out there, the service degradation is just terrible, I played Lord of the Rings Online on a 3G card for almost a year.

For local FPS ADSL is the only option.

My current unshaped line as home on a 4MB ADSL gave me 188ms last night in LOTRO and that you can live with :-)

Rouxenator, I don't understand why you prefer copper over wireless. It's so obvious that wireless is the superior technology.

Have to disagree, wireless is not superior. In my experience, the line drop too much, signal fluctuate to much, it more expensive (per meg that is) specially on prepaid (me don't want contract).

And ngage, man, I thought you were more mature than that :(

I do not prefer copper over wireless. RMFP. BTW - Have you ever seen the new n-gage on Nseries devices ?

I have fixed wireless and it is only R19 per GB more than ADSL prepaid. The jpegs and mp3s that I transfer over it looks just as good as on ADSL.

Rouxenator, we all understand that only toddlers play games, as per your previous post. Your are 110% correct. Most of my friends who are gamers are 25+, clearly babies of society.

About wired internet being better, just look at all the stats available.

ADSL is only perceived to be better for gaming, voip and time-sensitive online activities. I mean, the 220 odd latency I get in WoW on my unshaped ADSL is so crap, I wish I had wireless so I could compete better on 500ms+. ADSL has so little packet loss, how the hell am I supposed to teleport around the screen now?

Gief wireless tbh, the bestest best thingie in the whole wurld.

Fixed line is ALWAYS preferred over wireless. No exception. Disconnects. High ping, severe ervice degradation at peak times, Signal strength, weather are things a person shouldn't have to worry about.

Qwikslver, it's only you and Rouxenator who prefer wired connections.

The enlightened ones choose wireless.

I have none of those on my 2mbps connection. Also, while I don't w4nk to latency response times, I know my latency is decent as I make VOIP calls to Japan and Europe and it is exactly the same as though I was calling someone in my local area code using a landline.

To give you some idea of the "last mile" path my VOIP calls takes, it goes from my phone over WiFi to my Linksys WRT54, then it travels about 5m via CAT5 to my fixed wireless CPE and then about 12km to the base station. That is actually two wireless segments with a little copper between. Still my VOIP calls are perfect.

LOL -yes- says you a WoW player. Whatever you say sonny... :D! Don't forget to pack away your toy [-]soldiers[/-] heros when you are done playing Patchcraft.

This is all good and well. I sometimes get 305ms ping in WoW using 3G. But MOST OF THE TIME it is between 1500ms and 2000ms.

So I KNOW I could get good pings, but I get bad ones. That sucks even more.

That is the problem with Wireless. It is not perceived, it is real. When your tower gets congested your service sucks badly. And since there is a tower that covers your area, the big companies don't care about you. They won't install more towers to "over cover" your area, they would rather catch new fools with new towers.

So get NeoFlex while the towers are uncongested, but don't come crying a year from now when your pings spike all the time, page loads are interrupted and the internet as a whole sucks.

Wireless != the answer. Copper and Fiber = the answer.

while ($adsl_latency && Price || Caps) || ($3G_latency && Price || Caps) > ($neoflex_latency || < $neoflex_latency && > Price) { netsh int ip set address "Neotel" 1 | set %Neotel Answer }

Ah c'mon Roux, you don't have to pretend anymore. Just tell everyone you are a gamer. And please, just try out wireless, I promise you will love it.

Let go of the wire, just say no.

Good point Cloud. I love the teleportation in FPS games and the way guys "slide" around, without even moving their legs. Gonna ditch the ADSL and leap into the 21st century. Wireless FTW.

Finally, someone who understands.

Let's leap together!

Come Roux, it's so much better on this side!

Haha. But I can play COD2 on my HSDPA...
Saying the latency is low enough for MMORPGs really isn't saying much at all

You haven't played any MMO's have you

If your playing on an international server it does make a big difference ;)
There is a difference between 0.3 second lag when you press a button and 1 or 1.2 seconds ;)

1000 ms = 1 second lag

If you are fighting another player or a boss in an MMO which work on timers and rotations every second if of great importance. If I need to jump/move/run and it take my char 1 second to respond, it's to late ;)

Pfft, FPS's you can do by camping around a corner with 200ms latency

Latency is a factor on any game and all platforms
