Wireless Gaming: Neotel

you guys cant compare wireless to wired, thats like comparing car to a bike.. you compare copper with fibre and cable and 3G with wimax, wifi and so forth.. but then in SA's case the days you even get to see cable or fibre are very very very distant.

now if only they actually had coverage in my area!

if you need a to pull a trailer through mud, you buy a tractor.
if you want to go fast you buy a Lamborghini.

if you want low latency you get ADSL
if you want newer, cheaper (only in SA), easier, convenient or "the future" then get wireless.

just depends on what you want, but saying wireless is better than adsl cos it is a newer tech is just a stupid argument.

Qwikslver, it's only you and Rouxenator who prefer wired connections.

The enlightened ones choose wireless.

Blah blah blah, you must be referrinf to people who run around in rpg type games hitting bunnies with sticks. There is no way that wireless will be able to have the same latency(yes kids this is about latency) as a wired connection.

Wireless is a viable last mile technology if it is done correctly and for certain slower paced games and normal browers.

I have a HSUPA enable 3G setup at home and I get an average of 150ms pings to local game servers, when I was on a 384k line then I was getting around 60ms. So maybe you should go do some internet research about latency and then come back to try and argue your invalid points.

Ah c'mon Roux, you don't have to pretend anymore. Just tell everyone you are a gamer. And please, just try out wireless, I promise you will love it.

Let go of the wire, just say no.

wireless sucks:) and i have tested most wireless offerings and no wireless comes close to my adsl with speed or stability or reliability.

Ok, let's look at another weakness of Wireless: congestion.

Companies plonk down a tower and hundreds of users suddenly start using it. Guess what? IT SUX!!!

If you have the tower to yourself or just a few people Wireless is awesome. Sure the latency cannot compare to ADSL, but if you can live with the latency then the connection is good.

But the moment the other 99% also start downloading/voip-ing/gaming/emailing/whatevering your connection dies or speed drops. Your experience sucks.

Then you realise why everyone is going on about ADSL.

Now my question about NeoFlex: How long will it be usable? With the amount of hassle Neotel is having to just expand their coverage, will they be able to ensure that they provide a decent service 6 months from now? A year? 2 years?

Congestion has got nothing to do with the medium of delivery - it has more to do with the infrastructure that the network uses behind it.

And Neotel have an all fiber backbone, so if the towers can handle the signal distribution it should be ok

Exactly. I have never experienced any contention on my current wireless provider nor do I find any problems on Vodacom 3G. I do sometimes find such problems on Virgin Mobile but that is what you can except from the Cell C network.

So a fiber backbone means the tower won't get congested? The CPU will handle it? It has no maximum throughput?

Wireless, by nature, can get congested way to easily. Why do you think there are so many fights about spectrum? Sure, some technologies have better spectral efficiency than others (and it is getting better) but you get to the point where the tower gets overwhelmed. Sure, you can add more antennas, but each needs to be on a different frequency band.

What happens when you run out of frequency? Will a fiber backbone solve that problem too?

Come on people, Wireless works for a while, then it gets congested. Unless you are lucky enough to either live next to the base station, or live in a town with a population of 10 geeks.

Vodacom 3G is UBER CR@P where I live most of the time. I know it can be awesome, because I have used it when it is, but most of the time it is cr@p.

It is not Vodacoms fault, they cannot erect more towers in my area. Point is the tower that should be capable of serving me is congested.

Wireless sucks.

Pilgrim, you're right. Wireless is completely unfit for use by more than a handful of people at a time. I mean really, what is this GSM talking on a portable device nonsense anyway. I say the world will use no more than 5 of these portable "telephones".

Ah, now you hit the nail on the head. GSM TALKING. How about you throw 10 people using true broadband on that tower too? You know, 100Mbps like they have overseas. How many such connections can the tower handle?

Perhaps I should clarify my revulsion a bit. Wireless "broadband" SUX!

For voice calls it is almost ok, although I do get my GSM call dropped every now and then. And "network busy" signals too. But let's not talk about those...

I wish some company in this country would realise that true broadband needs wires.

No it does not. 3G LTE will give you 100mbps+ in the palm of your hand.

Sure, fiber is the only thing you can use for the backbone, but last mile will become more and more wireless.

Neotel FTW !
