Woolies going cashless?

They can if its their policy. What they cant do is say they accept cash and refuse you if you pay in R1 coins
Not necessarily. There is a limit over which they are not obligated to accept coins. The limit varies depending on the coin but iirc for R1 coins they are not forced to accept payments of over R50.

It happened to my dad. He just said he didn't have a bank card so he's unsure how they will get paid for the meal he had eaten or how the waitress would receive her tip. Suddenly they accepted his cash.

So what happens when the cashless systems don't work?

This is South Africa at the end of the day, anything is possible. How many times have we seen Capitec issues lately.
Unless WW use Capitec for acquiring (which they don't), it will make little difference. Capitec issues would only affect Capitec cardholders.

The only way this affects Capitec customers is all that time spent in the queue at the Capitec ATMs will be in vain...

Cashless shopping is latest response to attacks on money vans

Woolworths coffee shop announcement follows Shoprite group’s pilot sites

The coffee shops attached to Woolworths stores are going cashless from this month, with the retailer saying this is for the “safety and convenience” of customers and staff.

The announcement of the change at WCafe outlets trended at the weekend after a social media user posted an image of an announcement at a store stating: “We’re going cashless. From January 16, we will no longer accept cash as we’ve joined global responsible businesses that prioritise customers and staff safety.”

Confusion among social media users about this applying to all Woolworths operations, including its food stores, was clarified by the retailer in the comment threads.

The announcement saw some commentators questioning if this was exclusionary, saying not all shoppers would be able to pay with cards.

I don't use cash much at all. Seems like a logical move.
People need to get with the times.

Agreed. Less counterfeiting, fewer cash-in-transit robberies, and more accountability for criminal and corrupt transactions. What’s not to like.

They will not say no to cash. Whoever dreamed this up is far removed from reality

“Only selected WCafe’s will be going cashless. Customers will still be able to pay for all their Food, Fashion, Beauty and Home purchases with either cash or card at the tellers, as has always been the case,” said the retailer.

Most SA stores will eventually go cashless.... but people will still be able to carry cash.
Nothing here for people to freak out about.

Who exactly besides @purple face is freaking out ?

There is a whole segment of conspiracy theorist Twitter that is wigging out because of this. It's so odd.

I get that it is potentially dystopian because banks have been weaponized against people, but I feel that we should rather protect against that instead of using an outdated form of tender.
