WoW with new uncapped offerings

1. Which router should I get? I'd recommend a Billion Router. Very stable, easy to configure and Telkom support techs are familiar with it.
2. Which provider would now be best for me? Web Africa Unshaped or even Shaped. Rock solid stability, best latency (imho and from what i've been hearing) and their Shaped package is quite a bit cheaper and still very decent. Afrihost is "ok" 80% of the time, but has left me in the lurch on a number of occasions.
3. Of your suggestion...which package? As above.
4. By keeping my Mweb unshaped package, I have the line rental already included, and don't have to pay again for that? Currently paying R579 (in the region...) Correct, you only pay eg. R29 p/g to Afrihost.

@conack

thx for the quick reply, i followed it through and got a prepaid 1gig (R99) for now. will be testing it for a while, and then make a decision. Atm I have a little bit higher latency than before, app. 550-600ms.
Anyway, its good to have a backup provider :D

edit: its giving me up to now the same latencies as before...seems then that Seacom is of no benefit to me

Tom242,

I also suggest the WebAfrica accounts, they might not be the most affordable right now...but you will find them fairly stable.

Now I read your latency is about 500-600ms, you can bring that quite a bit down by doing 1 of these 2 things.

1. Use this addon called Leatrix latency fix -> http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info13581-LeatrixLatencyFix.html
Basically it will make your pc respond faster, good for games, not so good for downloading, but since you don't care about that, why not give up 5% speed of downloading for maybe 50-200ms in WoW.

2. Use a gaming proxy like lowerping or whatever. When you use this you don't need Leatrix's latency fix, using sockscap or ect you kinda bypass the Windows setting that Leatrix affect, so you automatically get that included, though this option costs another bit of money each month.

I suggest number 1.

With number 1 I get about 300ms ping on EU-Sylvanas though it can be lower, however I noticed there is some strange routing at the moment in EU causing a extra 100ms, so I get 350ms instead of my usual 250ms.

Number 2 works too, but personally I wouldn't use Lowerping myself, in fact I don't but it does work for a lot of people out there.

hi,

i tried the latency fix before, did not work out...if i remember correctly the latency was more or less the same, but I got dc'ed quite often. Maybe i should try it again though.
I was told that my poor latency comes from the distance to the exchange, which is 5.2 km's. What I don't understand is why this is not getting improved, living in one of the fastest growing suburbs.
appreciate all advice, because i would like to enjoy my gaming experience like the guys overseas (dreaming?)...at least get the best possible.

Well it is true, this fix will work for the majority, about 90% people, but some might have problems with it. I was unaware that you might have somewhat of a unstable dsl line in which case it is very possible it could make things worse, but even then I can't see how gaming is good on the line to start with.

The only way it could improve, is if you find out that telkom added a exchange closer to your house than the current one you are on, and you will have to let them know you have problems with your current exchange and wants to move. Otherwise things won't improve magically, as long as they don't hear from you they will think you are perfectly happy as is.

just an update after switching to WA prepaid unshaped....best latency I ever had :D
yesterday's 25man with Teamspeak....400ms

seems to be better in the evenings

very happy about this atm, I got the Mweb unshaped still as a backup, but might get their shaped uncapped one for all other internet needs

Awesome, glad to hear :)

You also might want to try the new Web Africa Titan deal. I'm getting fairly decent latency atm, but the Unshaped package is obviously topdog for raiding.

Im gonna test my Mweb account tonight in ICC, seems stable atm getting 310-330 average. If it fails i still have my WA unshaped :D

The latency you get with a proxie i get without a proxie :P, leatrix latency fix braught my latency down by a couple hundred.

Terumo (leatrix) ftw. I am using WA / Leatrix / Proxie and sitting in Dalran on the Boston SERVER (USA) with 314 ping.
Happy with that.

Have you tried leatrix latency fix?

yes I did try...but did not work, plenty dc's. I am actually quite happy with the lower 400's I am getting with WA.
I gave Mweb's package another try tonight, ICC25 with a twink. 800ms latency...it really sucks, does not work for me atm. Compared to the last 2 ICC25 raids on WA...420ms constant.

Nice to know, i use WA and Mweb for my downloads both on Leatrix. Mweb seems fine on 5 mans and 10 mans wanted to try on icc25 tonight but we had some slackers :P Will prolly try tomorrow

Guys I must admit I do not understand half the terminology in your conversations, but I changed to uncapped Diamatrix last month with a 4 Meg line and I'm very happy. What have you experienced, just so I know how they rate compared to other ISP's?

I tried Leatrix again tonight..did not improve my latencies.
