I don't know why he has to have everyone cheering him on because he bought it :/ If you love it, then great.

IAP refuses to believe of the 2000+ Blu Ray movies, 80% of them only have 5.1 lossless sound and not the 8 channel sound he so often brags about hearing (those are less than 10%)

Moot point since most people only have 6 channel systems anyways (if any).

The human ear in incapable of differentiating between lossy and lossless sound (IIRC) and even if you have studio quality equipment, it doesn't make much of a difference. High quality 5.1 vs. lossy 7.1...I'll be damned if I could tell the difference.

But if you've seen some his posts boasting about the 7.1 lossless sound on a Sony system, people will start thinking they really are missing something major. And as said, there are very few 8 channel titles out ....

I mean c'mon...how much extra oooomph could be squeezed out of 2 extra channels?

If anything, audio systems with 2 subs (5.2 as opposed to 5.1) make a bigger impact that 7.1...it's the human factor. We're more amazed at a bigger thud sound than we are at hearing raindrops channeled through 2 extra speakers.

In one post I said I was happy to put my 7 year old Onkyo 5.1 and Elac speakers against his 7.1 lossless Sony.

OK...one more thing. I've been reading these threads on my phone during the day and I keep seeing the magic "R100k" figures bandied about. Why does EVERY single post of his mention this figure?

I think IAP should head over to www.blu-ray.com or avsforums and really see how the pros debate audio/video/HTPC topics. Just randomly saying 7.1 > 5.1 just shows the lack of depth of knowledge. I don't pretend to know everything about this topic but I do know that positioning of speaker, quality of source, cabling etc play a major role in what is an isn't discernible to the human ear at the end of the day.

It started a few weeks ago when I made a comment that the PS3 couldn't do bitstreaming.

IAP just about crucified me as there was a negative comment against the magic box - and hurled insults that I knew nothing, didn't have a HT etc etc.

I let it slide for a few more posts - but evetually decided to let him know I did have one - and according to me, slightly more than the average. It helped the HT debate at the time - but he latched to the figure and he's mentioned it about 30x since in fits of rage.

He's deleted almost half the posts, but there are still a ton of him throwing it around.

On top of this, he turns it around and says I'm bragging - when I mentioned it once many, many weeks ago to prove I could actually speak about stuff (IAP believes if you don't own a device, you can't speak about it. Period)

However, he's clarly got an issue with it

Digital vs coax, length of the cable used in the setup, shielding etc...although that probably plays the smallest role in the final output, I read enthusiasts going off on a tangent about it all the time.

Coax generally IS digital. But any cable can be used for either analog or digital. The variations originate from a good (or bad) frequency response in the band of interest.

Cable length, too, is negligible, unless you're talking about INSANELY long cables.

So again, sorry if it grates anyone, If someone try to shoot down a R20K system with a 100K comparison system as answer then thats his problem (whether it's was non existent or not). I will remind him of that at any point and time as I choose fit. He compared the Sony+PS3 with the 100K system not me! Live with it.

Dolby compared the quality of the PS3 with his supposed to be 100K system hee owns. Lying? as at the time he did not even have a hd TV? Tsk, Tsk. Nether a BluRay, Tsk, Tsk.

Dolby it's the Xbox owners that believe that you cannot talk or discuss something you do not own or have experience about, like the PS3 or Xbox.
Also remember that It's YOU that stated you like to argue a point untill you "experience" the alternate viewpoint to prove the differ.

I never stated that 7.1>>5.1. It depends on the source, quality of the artists/sound engineers presentation, etc. A fact is that a properly setup 7.1 system will present the Theatrical presentation of any Video title that have the 7.1 channels as dicrete channels engineered better than the same title on a 5.1 system. Upscaling 5.1 to 7.1 generally does not work well as the effect can be muffled, confusing sounds.

ts not about the OOOmph as you put it, , that is more distortion when you OOOOOOmph a sound system, its all about the discrete independent 7.1 channels each emanating it own staged sound for the correct sound positioning/staging as the original masters/engineers intended it to be. I think more members must head to the AV forums and go educate themselves.
