Xbox One in trouble.

So MS is next gen's Sony and Sony is next gen's MS.

Not exactly. The Xbox isn't more powerful than the PS4... But in terms of a few other factors, it certainly appears that way.

All of this has made me think- perhaps it will be better to scoop up a bargain PS3 deal, a few choice exclusives and the better cross-platform titles, and wait for the next-gen consoles to hit their first revision cycle, before taking the plunge...

Not a horrible idea, if you want to be conservative. There's still a massive install base on both ends, expect years of games being released for both those platforms.

I did purchase the PS3 at launch last time out, so this generation will have it's turn to wait :p

The better titles only start appearing later on into the lifecycles anyway. And the visual improvements of the next (eighth by my count) generation over the current generation, are not as great as the jump from the sixth to seventh generation was. At least not at the moment.

Wow guys so Microsoft just clarified some things: NOT GOOD.

Always on internet required and they effectively killing the second hand market:
http://www.lazygamer.net/24/microsoft-confirms-insane-xbox-one-drm/

If PS4 provides even slighty better policies (which they have already said that they will...) then Xbox One can just never be the better choice if you are a gamer and not a TV watcher. WTF Microsoft, eish!

really sad news for console gamers

"To save you skimming large tracts of condescending prose about how much Microsoft loves and respects you as a human wallet, here is a summary:

You do not own the games you buy. You license them.
Discs are only used to install and then license games and do not imply ownership.
People can play games installed on your console whether you're logged in or not.
10 people can be authorised to play these games on a different Xbox One via the cloud, but not at the same time, similar to iTunes authorised devices.
Publishers decide whether you can trade in your games and may charge for this.
Publishers decide whether you can give a game you own to someone for free, and this only works if they have been on your friends list for 30 days.
Your account allows you to play the games you license on any console.
Your Xbox One must connect to the internet every 24 hours to keep playing games.
When playing on another Xbox One with your account, this is reduced to one hour.
Live TV, Blu-ray and DVD movies are exempt from these internet requirements.
Loaning and renting games will not be possible at launch, but Microsoft is "exploring the possibilities".
Microsoft may change these policies or discontinue them at any point."

:( angry joe pretty much sums it up as well

If sony does the same, im sticking to PC

How exactly can a console be in trouble before anyone has actually seen any content on the console?

Because we cant use it here in ZA if the internet goes down.

As Paul Thurrott - an avid gamer - points out, most people are not getting the incremental reveal strategy. This is normal when there's a big gap between first reveal and final release. Most of the sexy game-specific stuff on Xbox One has not been revealed. That comes later. This way MSFT keep Xbox in the news for longer, without giving away too much to the competition. Relax. By the time it ships, you'll be salivating.

I disagree, all publicity is good publicity.
Sure however notice how many people have already decided that the PS4 is gonna be the number one choice next generation. BTW I own a 360 so ...MS managed to drive me away.

Also with no backward compatibility I can easily change to PS4 without worrying about losing my collection as its already lost once my 360 dies.

You are going to be sorely surprised this time round.

All speculation except for the DRM. PS4 will have shared ram which slows down the system. If you don't believe this look at APU benchmarks with faster ram. GDDR5 is already slower for CPU use. It's going to be a nightmare coding to take full advantage of it and then will still not match the performance of dedicated GPU and CPU ram. Separate GPU and CPU ram is the best choice and is actually less complicated to implement.

With talk of "Xbone" one can see where this is coming from.

Its change that will happen, for better or worse.

I think people's thoughts are that games and game disks are their property, this is not correct, you agree to an agreement to use the software, you don't get to OWN it, they developer /publisher owns the software.

There is definitely abuse by greedy companies, but we are to blame for this, we vote with our wallets, and I'll rest my case (opinion) on this:

If you don't like it, don't buy it.

PS. an alternative would be for developers to choose if their game may be sold for second hand, then let people choose if the game is worth their hard earned cash.
European courts have declared that it is property that can be resold. Change is something that will happen yes. The gaming industry have too long acted like it has a special place it the world. So people like to play games and that's fine I do too. But the gaming industry will realise it has to play the ball under the same rules as everybody else. It's stubbornness that will ruin gaming's future. I will buy games buy I have the right to insist that it be under the same laws as anything else I buy.

What? You dont know what you are talking about. One of the major advantages of the XBox360 over the PS3 was that it had a shared pool of memory instead of two distinct pools of memory. Shared memory does not make it slower. GDDR5 has far, far higher bandwidth, but its latency is a little higher. Its a lot easier to cater for slightly higher latency than it is to hide much slower bandwidth.

Remember, the Xbone has about 1/3rd the memory bandwidth of the PS4, at least where main memory is concerned.

All this talk about second hand games and Steam makes me wonder if people really understand why Steam is so good at online never resold games.

Simple, its sales, from Annual bundle sales where you get like 20+ games for $50 or less, to weekly and daily game sales. Example:
Weekend spotlight http://store.steampowered.com/app/55230/?snr=1_4_4__40
Deal of the day http://store.steampowered.com/app/2700/
Also the fact that older titles prices drop as time goes on.

In short: Steam makes sales so good it kills the need for second hand games.

Now if console makers make use of such sales then I will have no problem with restrictions but they don't, hell even if you go retail you will find last years games at the same prices as opening day.

As for 24 hour check in, My PC is not just a gaming machine. It gets used for banking, social, work and other tasks as well, all of them needs internet so I do not mind It connecting once a day. I also do not take it with me to the farm to game on. It stays on my desk.

My Console on the other hand is purly bought for gaming on the TV or when on holiday, I can plug the console in the car with LCD screens for the kids when driving down to the Cape, I can plug the console into the TV on the farm for when kids want something to do at night. I want a console that I can take with when going on holiday next to a beach and it rains. (Hell knows no fury like a rainy day in a cramped space and board kids with nothing to do) <-- Xbox in the past allowed me a sane mind. I would like to continue with this practice and still be able to give them the latest games. Microsoft by the looks of it has other idea's.

They wanna make the Xbox one a lot less mobile, from internet access to the always plugged in kinect. Its gonna be a console filled with hurdles.

PS4 press conference scheduled for 10th of June.....can't wait to see what they have to bring to the table :)

PS: Why did MS choose such a obscure name for the new xbox?

We all know v[-]one[/-]1 products are dodgy. At least the PlayStation will be v4 :p

Exactly, it's higher, and not a little as well. Which makes it bad for system use. Where GPUs can get away with it is that they handle larger amounts of data in parallel. This higher bandwidth is wasted on the CPU where even most floating points are not larger than 64-bit. If higher bandwidth was a great advantage then 3-channel memory should have been 50% faster than 2-channel. It was on average not more than 10% and never gave Intel an advantage. 2-channel was on average 40-50% faster. That's with the same latency so no disadvantages but on the PS4 if developers don't order data for parallel use it's going to show the bottleneck.

Shared memory has never been an advantage. If it is on the PS4 it will make history.

As was said previously. A shared memory pool was one advantage that the 360 had over the PS3.
