Xbox Series X / S

So I'm not a huge follower of moves like this, but as I understand it the core team (Shinji Mikami and a number of others) at Tango Gameworks up sticks and left to start their own thing, I'd hazard a guess that is one of the drivers for MS to shutter the studio.

Nah that's false. Someone from tango refuted this, I'll try to find the tweet. Shinji Mikami left a while ago but everyone else was still there, and he basically left because he felt the studio was in good hands.

No I do not agree with that at all. It reeks of "if I can't have it then nobody can" mentality and it hurts both studio and industry as a whole.

These things are not hard to figure out. Sony and Nintendo figured it out just fine.

Games should not be on Game Pass day one. It should never have been. It totally ****ed the future of it because now they are in a tight spot and cannot reverse it without backlash.

Phil's 70b "career move" woke his sleeping overlords and now his balls is in a vice. He is not the messiah of Xbox. He is not your gaming buddy and he is not your friend. He is a suit and if Satya tells him to jump he asks how ****ing high.

Ahhh could be, I was under the impression that he left, and poached a number of staff from Tango itself.

Regardless of that though, at the end of the day it is a business and MS would have a reason for culling the studio.

Shinji Mikami was never meant to stay there forever. He just helped create it.

Found it:

The point is their reason is BS, reducing entire studios that made good games to a PL statement. If they couldn't figure out how to make money from good games that's a failure on Xbox management not the devs that made good games!

Ok, and what do you do to a business when the creative driver of something leaves and then the business starts to possibly falter or not be as "good" as it used to be?

Oh I'm not saying that MS don't take a chunk of the blame in this, but at the end of the day it generally does boil down to a PL statement, what is the point of pouring good money into an entity if that entity isn't producing returns, regardless of how good the devs are? (and I say this without knowing if Tango was profitable, or anything of the sort of course)

MS doesn't take a chunk of the blame they take all of it...Tango seemed to make enough money to keep themselves afloat before MS. Of course there's no way of knowing if Bethesda wouldn't have closed them down themselves, but just thinking out loud: Imagine releasing Hifi rush at $29 to a potential buyer pool of 500 million people (Steam, XB, PS4/5, Switch) instead of just giving it away on Game Pass, I bet this game would've sold decently well, well enough to fund a sequel.

These acquisitions just aren't good for the industry, no matter who's doing it. Too bad regulators are useless

I don't think its necessarily that cut and dried.

Yes the game may have done decently if sold at $29, and for all we know it would have kept the studio going, but that is just conjecture.

I am in 2 minds about the acquisitions being good for the industry or not... they're good in so much as it allows for the budgets required for AAA games, but its bad that a AAA game is make or break for any studio, but it also does dampen the "indy" style off the wall type of game.

Does not compute?

Yes they live and die because of exclusivity.

That is why you have things like Spider Man 2 on PS5 and Zelda Tears of the Kingdom on the Switch only.

The majority of people on consoles play the same games between PS and XB (1) Call of Duty HQ 2) Fortnite 3) Grand Theft Auto V 4) NBA 2K24 5) Roblox.) The outlier is CoD that is now owned by MS, but there's is just no way they would be able to make that exclusive without losing absolute billions for years on end.

Times have changed, people are not easily switching consoles for a few exclusives imo. Switch is a bit different because a lot of PS/XB owners have a Switch as their secondary, but a very small amount will have both a PS and XB...

Dont need to make CoD exclusive, back in 360 PS3 days you just had exclusive DLC;s ;)

But yes we too deep into this generation for anyone to switch to another ecosystem.

MS is moving out of exclusivity, Sea of Thieves prove they can make so much more even on a rival platform which means more games coming to PlayStation, more profit, thats why they are a 3 trillion dollar company.

Kinda Sad really to see them stepping out of the console race.

I do believe competition foster innovation and if Sony has less push to compete they will have an open door to f people over.

Monopolies are never good.

It's their model going back to the IBM days. The just want their software on as much hardware as possible. Xbox will eventually be a niche btw thing, but the software will be their focus.

Sony and Nintendo will still make money from hardware sales, but MS will make a kakload more outside that space...

We will hear on 9 June during the showcase if CoD is coming to GamePass and I am willing to take a bet that it will.

This, and to be dominant in cloud gaming as well.

Well this business did not falter. It literally made Xbox's best liked and rated game last year and the team were right smack in the middle of asking to make its follow-up.

Consider that this were their only Japanese studio put together by a Japanese industry vet.

And as for Shinji Mikami he himself were outspoken about how he wanted to leave the industry. He was never part of the package meant to stay on forever.

Exclusivity is not a good thing. Exclusivity is a bad thing. Especially in a profit above all else industry.

Go grab two pieces of paper from your copier. Pick any wall in the room and tape one piece of paper right smack in the middle of it. Now take the other piece of paper, fold it into a ball, take 5 steps back, close your eyes and throw it at the piece of paper 10 times.

Congratulations. You hit your target only 3 or 4 times and missed it completely 6 or 7 times. Job well done. Bonusses all around...

Now walk to the wall and pull of that piece of paper. The wall is now your target. Again take 5 steps back, close your eyes and throw at it 10 times.

...

Microsoft is deliberately excluding day 1 retail sales.

Sony and Nintendo are enforcing it.

Guess who's leading the race? And guess who's not even participating at this point?
