Yeah I think it is damage control. If people think there will be no more Xbox hardware, they might be even more inclined to jump over to PS.

The price is only going up in November, so will only reflect once this happens.

It would be dumb for them to stop hardware and push everyone to PS. Sony doesn't want GP on their platform competing with PS+, so it limits MS to PC and Switch.
Then again MS has been doing dumb things lately...
Yeah who knows, but one thing is for certain, them hiking the prices of the hardware twice in a year, big US retailers stopped stocking Xbox S/X consoles and now the Gamepass hike will only further push people into PS's hands.
If you want people on your hardware, you do the opposite of the above.
Now I checked my actual Microsoft account and it shows R199, will check on my Xbox when I get home later.My GP is reflecting the higher amount already, apparently it has something to do with your billing cycle

So guess the backtracking... but only so it looks like they not, while also implementing the new prices.
Update: this is only select regions and does not include South Africa.

@AlphaJohn is that a mail you received, or a general image of the Internet?
I ask because I read that in EU, it is not allowed to just raise subs without user consent, so it seems they are bribed with the "as long as you have auto renew enabled" clause.
Here in SA, I very clearly received a mail that my subs is going up. In fact, my sub changed just now to Premium as today is my billing day.

No email yet and sub info clearly states R199.00 for GP Ultimate on 16 October so I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Can confirm, as stated earlier I saw the new price, then went into my Microsoft account switched on recurring and bam, R199 next charge 10/10/25. Switched on Xbox and it is also reflecting the R199.
So the switching recurring on seemed to work for me, but I know what's coming on the next charge after after 04 November
No email my side.
But did receive this email when doing it, I loaded just enough airtime on my Vodacom sim R199, do let me see of it goes off at that price

My downgrade to Premium kicked in last night.
Uninstalled Indiana Jones, Towerborne, Gears, Silksong, Core Keeper, Expedition 33, Herdling, and Prince of Persia last night; none of them available any more. I had a look at the store for the first time in a long time to see what certain games cost.
It's a really strange, almost depressing feeling. Like a punishment not just a downgrade. Puts you off gaming for a bit...
For the first time in many years, I'm browsing PC component pricing again and eyeballing Steam pricing.
Microsoft has really screwed up on this one.

Lucky for me I have both PS5 & Xbox SX
So will drop Xbox to Essential and upgrade PS+ from Essential to Extra
Extra costs R1870/12=R155 unless there is a Black Friday deal
PS Extra's list is not as good as GP Ultimate but way more than GP Premium
