I can't find anything about when this phone will be available in SA. Anybody know when it will be available and the contract/price involved.

Regards,

Well, according to GSMArena, it's only being released in the first quarter of 2010 which would be some time before the end of March.
We always get things a bit late here...

Your best bet would be to phone around and see when the SP's are expecting it to land in SA

I've been asking around at various vodashops, they have no idea other than that it's 'soon' and they'll go on sale as soon as the stock arrives. You'll probably have to talk to people higher up to get a definite date - if you find anything out, please let the rest of us know :D Educated guess says the beginning of April, I've seen four or five overseas markets have confirmed the first week in April, so hopefully it's a worldwide launch and we get it at the same time...

It's an error in the print. It's Android.

I know, hence the winkey face.

I really wish someone could put down a concrete date for this phone, been waiting almost a month for an upgrade worthy phone, dont want to wait another month being stringd along by promises of 'coming soon'.

I've also been waiting for this phone. I was told to expect it around End of April. Apparently MTN have it in their test lab and it failed soem of their tests - they wating for new firmware upgrades

hey

i played with this phone the other day at Sony in Japan. Im an old SE fan but i was not too impressed. (mind you i am currently using Nexus, so im judging it against that)

Its massive ! screen seemed larger than even nexus. Screen definitely not as colorful and bright at nexus. i was very interested to see what SE UI was looking like on top of android (1.6)
It only had 3 home screens (nexus has 5, hero has 7)
Phone was fast thru menus, thru settings, typing etc.... very nice
but when you switched to "media" its became a bit laggy. was laggy in their pic viewer and when rotating the phone in pic mode.

nice phone, not as nice as it could be, yes can be fixed with updates, but damn if we had to wait this long just for this release, how long you gonna wait
for firmware updates???

The colour issue would be because it's running 1.6, which can only support 65k colours, whereas 2.1 supports full 16M, so that would obviously get fixed in the update whenever it comes out.

Did you play with a production unit, or some sort of demo? AFAIK the X10 hasnt been released anywhere yet, it's not only SA that's waiting.

Considering how long ago SE announced this phone, they've really dropped the ball. Three months ago this phone would have made massive waves, now it looks like the HTC Desire might beat it to market and I'm starting to lean towards the desire myself...

agree.... HTC is destroying everyone else with phones to market in record time. no doubt the Desire and Legend will beat this one to market.
I played with one at the Sony exhibition building which is in essence a big Sony showroom showing latest products and new upcoming products.
I totally feel it was a production unit as it was available to general public to play on.

Anyone from Vodacom care to comment on availability now that it is available in the UK, etc.?

Just saw on engadget that it doesnt support multitouch at a hardware level, that's a pretty big minus :( If this phone had come out last year it would have blown everyone away, the fact that it's still being reported as a little buggy this late in the game is worrying. Hopefully SE learn from their mistakes and do a better job on their next android phone. The hardware specs on this are very good (apart from the multitouch issue) and at least now they have a working software base to jumpstart the next phone from.

Can't wait to see this phone in stores. I'd like to demo it before buying.

It's looking like the Desire is going to be a better deal unless megapixels and screen size are really important to you. Would definitely like to play with both though, I agree.

Got an reply from Vodacom

"Thank you for your e-mail communication to Vodacom.
According to our Procurement division the handset is currently being tested . We do not have a release date available as yet.

Regards "

So lets hope its sooner than later.
