people always end up drinking way too much. the amount of control some people have, or lack rather, is quite alarming.

I usually attend year end functions, as I like to show that I am making an effort and appreciate the event they arrange. This year we are attending http://pigallerestaurants.co.za/

My employer is generous though. 5 big events a year, and another smaller gathering each month.

Looking forward to it :)

edit : nothing irritates me more than people bitching about year end functions, when they have never bothered to actually attend one. As with most things in life, dont look to other people/things to make it for you, its what YOU make of it.

yip I agree with you but it sometimes also has to do with the kind of people that you invite to your function,
its like the old saying, a bunch of bad neighbors does indeed make a bad neighborhood.

so if you invite people that like spinning BM's and drinking and setting things of fire, then your Christmas party is bound to be quite colorful.

but on the upside if its just your dept
it should be fine wont have too many crazy things happening, unless somebody does their party trick which involved the Cops.:D

Ag this year its going to be quite formal. So everyone will probably sit in their departments, and then some dancing after dinner.

Though I definitely wont be in a position to dance :erm:

It's not that they want to make friends with you but to create that team spirit which aids in better understanding of different personalities that make up the team. Without meaningful communication, collaboration and interaction, objectives might be a bit harder to achieve, don't yo think?

Bull****. Team spirit is just a word managers throw around that means "We want to make you feel good making us more richer" to me.

I think that attending is important - k@k or not.
Being at work is also about being a team player - this falls into that category.

And to top it off -when we eventually decided to leave - everyone catching the one girl in a drunken threesome in the back of the bus (with a strange couple no less). On my seat...

I'm to scared to ask what you mean by strange.

Never had a problem with year end functions at my previous job as they were so massive that it was just a good day off work with free food and drinks with anyone you fancied to kuier with.

Oddly enough enjoyed the subsidiary I was contracted to's functions a lot more as they were only like 200 people.

Now working for a small but high profit company we have a night out every quarter and every other one of them is normally coupled with something awesome like skydiving, scuba, paragliding, clay pigeon shooting or whatever we haven't done yet so it's pretty good.

We used to have nice departmental team buildings. A weekend at Afri Ski, White river, etc. Got cancelled by the new COO so have not had one in a year or two. Now I hear that due to good profits the entire company is going to Sun City for a weekend next April. Will see. I liked the smallish team based one's where it was about 30 of us somewhere cool just having some fun skiing, or shooting arrows/abseiling or river rafting etc.

I have to disagree, because, I have had the privilege of working with people whom I'd rather not associate myself with. I am nobody's team-mate. I am there to earn a wage to pay the bills. That's all. If they want team players they can go find them in the sports industry

You just have a bad attitude towards work.
You should try find a job/company that makes you happier.
It sounds altruistic and condescending, but you spend the majority of your waking hours at work - seeing it as exclusively a means of bill paying makes the time spent there seem worthless.

I agree with eehellfire. Koosi, you have serious work issues man. You're always complaining about your bosses, your colleagues, your bonus, team functions, etc. Honestly, you should not be in a corporate environment and I believe you could even be a danger to others around you. Seriously man, you have some heavy issues that you need to sort out. You should rather open a tea-room, do all the work yourself, and have no employees, colleagues or bosses...

I sometimes wish I was in sales. So many of the account managers and sales managers who smash their targets get sent overseas for a week to party! That is insane.

So, because I choose not to mix with *********s at work, I am told I have issues, etc..
That's really rich! Especially coming from a lot of people who spend their workdays on this forum, proving my theory that most loaf at work and have lots of time to become members of the company social club/clique. They they cry that they are getting no increases/bonuses. LOL :D.

If most were really working, there would be no time to hang around here and craft posts that contain complex language with an insulting payload.

I enjoy what I do for a living thanks, because I choose not to mix with the people there does not make me any less of a person. I do it for two reasons, because I enjoy what I do, and because it puts food on the table. I do not have to be their friends, I have enough friends thanks very much. So this is the deal- I can choose whom I want to socialize with, and if it makes you happy to make everyone your friend at work, then so be it. I know better though, and will not do it. I have been burnt before when these relationships don't go as planned. But moreover, the biggest thing for me is, its a friggen company, NOT a friggen bar, or nightclub or playground, even though most seem to think its high school

Koosi, sorry if it came across as harsh or untoward, but I was merely pointing out that you could find far greater happiness by looking for a different kind of work. Out of the corporate realm etc. A lot of the difficulties you encounter and have to endure are part and parcel of a corporate career. You are obviously a hard working and committed member of society who could be doing a lot more not only for yourself but for the economy :) With your attitude, which is completely fine (to each their own), you will always have the same problems in a corporate career. You will also be overlooked for many things which you would've enjoyed because of your cold, stand-offish approach. Unfortunately, corporate life is not for everyone.

Just for the record, I thoroughly enjoy my work, I get along really well with my colleagues and play golf with a few of them regularly. I have received really good increases and bonuses over the last few years and I've always worked at least 10 hours a day (excluding my 1 hour of forum trolling, give or take).

good luck, have fun sir.

Many years ago my wife's company took everyone to e very posh restaurant in Waterkloof Pta.

Everyone and everything looked so nice and as things progressed one guy got totally smashed and ended up throwing up on the floor in the dining room.

Everybody was so shocked but I almost fell over laughing. Last time they held something like that. :D

My previous company the year end functions were quite nice. It does helps if you are actually friends with your colleagues (as in you do see them after work/weekends), so then year end functions is just another outing. Since the company was an IT company, it was quite easy as everyone is on the same "level" in terms of work and all.

However, my current company (big manufacturing with combination of salaried and wage workers) i would not come close to the year end functions (i haven't been to one yet, but was already told what they were like in the past) . Luckily , the company isn't doing very well and they have stopped having year end functions completely this year.

Last year, it was each department for themselves (5-15 people) and they just said they will sponsor R150 per person for whatever the dept want to do. We just went for a pub lunch midweek during work hours, i can't complain about that. It was short enough to enjoy the food and seem mildly interested about your colleagues' shop-talk and get out of there and have afternoon off.

This year? R0 . So i don't have to feel guilty for not wanting to go because there isn't going to be one. Easy.

So yea, i can't say i've had any bad year end functions in the past, although i do hate all the awkwardness that comes with a big year end (especially if you have to hang out with people you normally don't enjoy hanging out with and adding their wives/husbands into the mix for an extra dose of awkward...).

Well Pavan, I will admit I am alot like Pavan. I have not been in the corporate world long but been burnt enough to realise that work is just about paying the bills and nothing more. You have your fun in your own time and space and that will make life alot less complicated. Too much politics when it comes to the working world, which I do not want to be dragged into.

The bottom line is the world out there is cold and stand-offish, people just don't give a damn about another person. But not everyone is like that.
