Yebo 4 Less

In all my ranting, have I missed something key? My mom's phone on topup135, says Y4L 50% Voda underneath where it says Vodacom SA. Is this good?
It's meaningless.

She's on topup so the discount won't apply to her. Cell Broadcast messages are sent to all subscribers irrespective of whether you're on contract, prepaid or topup as v3g said.

I see. That is what that meant :p

FFS! Why are contract customers not benefiting from this? So what the call rates are lower, pre paid guys don't pay a subscription, do they? Mmm, another reason to consider the MTN swop ...

Come and join us 'whiners' here before someone shoots you down in here.

I can tell you now the people seeing 50% displayed on their phones who are on contract are most probably gonna think that this "discount" is applicable to them aswell unless they have explicitly studied the ads. Maybe this is how they will recover revenue! LOL:p

Good point - I didn't even think about that.

Yip. They are going to have to get that sorted asap.

Nail on the head! "Recover the money from the contract subscribers!" Lame

I'm thinking of going to ASA...

I've checked with the marketing people today and they asked if you could explain how a line like:
Y4L 4% Vodacom 5% OTHER

can be seen as an advertisement?

What is wrong with the line (it was designed to convey information) and, as an comparison, how is MTN's cell-broadcast worded?

It says I will get 50% off if I phone a Voda and 50% if I phone a other, right here, right now, on my itti-bitti cellphone screen...

I bet ASA will see it as advertising... (R100?)

Did nobody think of this during the development of this product/campaign?

So in effect the Cell Broadcast message is an advertisement for a service you either can or cannot get and never delivers 99% because the wording says "up to 99%"

I'm thinking of going to ASA...

The ad campaign, i.e. printed media, tv, radio etc. says "UP TO" 99% off. The cell broadcast message gives the exact % discount applicable at any time. I have seen 99% yes, many times.

As for the top up customers not getting any benefit, maybe there is some merit in the argument, but was there any complaints from MTN MyChoice customers not getting any benefit from MTN zone?

You work for Vodacom?

I dont care about MTN, I care about these messages on my phone that says I should get 50% off if I call at this moment, but if I call it wouldn't work. They should have thought of this before. Say my mother sees this on her phone in Warmbaths and now she thinks she can call and get 50% off when soneone at her work mentioned "oh it shows you how much discount you get when you phone if it shows that", and shes on contract and thus doesn't get it.

And the only reason I know how its actually works is because I read this here thread. I havent seen an ad on TV, in radio or newspaper.

Speaking of MTN, this Zone thing is similar to this? Cause I was wondering about those ads with the people floating...

LOL, with what exactly? :D

I know nothing about cell networks but I trust what v3g says. If he says that there's no way a tower can broadcast messages to subscribers based on what package they have (i.e. contract, prepaid or topup) then why are you going on about it. It's a technical shortcoming of cell networks, not a Vodacom plot to take over the world...

OK, I'm going to indulge you even if you are being an obtusence.:p

It is an ad, because countless people will wonder what the message on their screens is about and they will tie it into your advertising. They will therefore want to get it (which is what ads are for). They will find they cannot and the advertising laws forbid ads for products that are not available. Heck, if that doesn't fit they'll make a new one to keep up with technology. Why you're broadcasting to contract accounts is beyond me. The cynical amongst us will agree that it will boost calls during that time by those hypothetical average consumers that believe a discount will apply. I'm sure Vodacom has discussed the merits of it long ago despite the naive impression we're getting that they have not.

Oh and while I'm about it - there's also a rule about when you can advertise "up to x%". It can't be on a blue moon like your internet speeds ()

So any information that gets sent to people is an advert? That's a bit of a stretch, even by your standards. If your phone say something like 'Yellow Broadband' or something similar, you read it as an add?

There's a reason it's called a "Cell Broadcast". I know you're a bit technically challenged, but have you ever thought what the word BROADCAST actually means. ;) (hint: compare with MULTICAST and UNICAST).

And you've not yet posted any of the "rules" you've alluded to. Just your own musings (which invariably is nothing but an attempt attack Vodacom), which quite frankly, I'm not in the least interested in.

Unless you can show that, in a sense of fairness, you took MTN to task when they did the exact same thing a few months ago? ;) But of course you can't, can you?...

there's also a rule about when you can advertise "up to x%".
All the banks advertise with loans up to 500k. Standard, FNB etc

They will find they cannot and the advertising laws forbid ads for products that are not available.
The product is available. Just because its not available as a bolt-on for your particular contract doesn't make it a product "that is not available".

Besides...Never seen an ad for say a new game before release date? Those aren't available either.

It is an ad, because countless people will wonder what the message on their screens is about and they will tie it into your advertising.
Tower information displayed is clearly not an ad/invitation to buy the bloody tower. Neither is info about current discount rates. If VC removes the Y4L part *then* they will get sued because "it will boost calls during that time by those hypothetical average consumers that believe a discount will apply."
