Your next drive will be solid

They are still too expensive and slower for some actions, and the wear levelling defeats things like hidden encrypted volumes (makes them detectable).

I have used 4GB SSDs in a few PC now it is OK at the price. I use CF cards with IDE adaptors and it works out below R200. I am planning on adding a 16GB one with a SATA adaptor to my current PC just to see what performance it gives.

Just extended my RAID over the 7th 1TB Seagate in my media server! Space for 1 more.

And now the 1.5TB's are out...

What's worse is that the price isn't too bad either. It's works out cheaper than buying a 1TB + 500GB. :(

I bought my second TB last month.

On Topic:

I would love to get my hands on an SSD but realistically I'll only get one next year this time..... if the price has dropped enough for me.

A bit too soon. Perhaps end of 2010 or early 2011 users will start buying SSD by default, not "your next drive"...

Well SSD's are not badly priced but the suppliers in this country just rip you off.

You can get a 128 gig SSD drive for around 380 dolla which is not bad plus they have basically a 0 seek time meaning everything should open instantly, no heat and no moving parts.

Solid state drive's are the future, i just don't know how long until they actually become a reality for the majority of people who are not willing to pay 5k for a 128 gig hdd.

Clever options

I don't think SSDs will replace hard disks. There are however a few clever options. Perhaps boot the OS from SSD and place data on normal hard disks.

In servers (and perhaps workstations), there is the option of Hierarchical Storage Management. Or perhaps use SSDs as some sort of cache in some type of Hybrid Storage, like already possible with ZFS. Discussed here.

SSD's are used by lots of hardcore gamers.. load times are lightning. a 32GB SSD is more than enough at this stage. Would have gotten one in december, but the current exchange rate made it R1k more expensive :P

and i just sold two of my 1tb Seagates in my pc, and purchased 4x1.5tb Seagates!

T_T
show off :(
:P
nice man i wish i had that much
i only have 2 TB for now but i need more space since HD takes up alot of space :D

im gona wait for this to become cheap then get a 80 gig one for my gaming and windows drive

I'm just wondering what the hell you guys are storing to have the need for so much space?

Guess having 50mbit uncapped cable to my place doesn't give me the need to horde anything :D

Damn freshy good call man, wow so a year later and they are still expensive!!!

Imagine they sold them cheap how fast they would sell.
