Zest T1

Anyone know if Zest is going to push on OTA update to fix the Stagefright vulnerability? It seems that in spite of the grand promises on their website, I haven't had an OTA update for about a year. Or else, is there some workaround to turn off MMS with Vodacom and MTN?

Disable auto retrieve of mms and delete your mms apn?
Don't expect any kind of software update. OTA or even otherwise. It's just not going to happen.

People has got a lot of patience with this piece of crap phone. I'm so sorry I bought it. Mine used in wife's photo studio to generate white noise.

Ask on facebook and see if u get a response. https://www.facebook.com/zestmobile?fref=ts

They seem to be selling the phones at all cash crusaders so they seem to have too much stock on hand and it's not selling enough through other channels

I couldn't be bothered to ask, if I'm really honest.
This phone served it's purpose but now I'm moving on. Next phone will be a Z3 compact or something along those lines. I'm tired of the T1 battery issues. It really is the biggest issue I'm having.

I disabled MMS auto retrieve. I sent Zest a private message on Facebook the day I saw the news about Stagefright, they never responded. Do not expect a response if you post a query on their Facebook page, they delete any post or response that does not fit in with their "good propaganda only" policy.

I've also managed to buy a used LG G3 which I'm very happy with. Not sure who to inflict my T1 on - with its 30minute battery and cracked screen. I cancelled my free gig with Afrihost and enabled 500MB per month APN on my pre-paid MTN sim through Axxess. Ignore the "contract sims only" policy, any MTN sim will work with either Afrihost or Axxess, but Axxess also has data rollover.

As owners of the Zest - would you recommend getting one as an entry level Android phone?
I want to get one for a family member, the R1,000 price tag is enticing (considering the specs of the phone)

Don't waste your money. Mine found its niche as a white noise generator for newborn baby photography.

At this price I still think it is a bargain. I am torn between it and an imported Android One phone.

Go for the Android One device... The Zest have a moody battery, mine is better again (12h+), but it was at 4 hours max at a time...

How'd you fix it?

It seems to have fixed itself... Likely the calibration issues...

Charging it before it completely dies (Draining batter to ~3.3V), requiring battery removal (which seems to reset the calibration data to some broken value) to get it to charge again seems to have helped... (The problem seems to be that a random number generator is used to measure the battery :) Or more likely, the cheapest possible resistors on the bad end of 20% tolerances, resulting in it under charge and over-draining the battery)

Where do you get it for R1000?
Ditto. Mine is an ultra emergency backup device, it could never cope with business use. But for moderate users, it will likely do fine, though don't buy it for the camera, probably interpolated up from 5 megapixels.
