Zest T1

After reading this thread and all the issues and the crappy attitude the CEO has, they'll never see my money.

Imo Afrihost made a mistake launching this beta product. Next time AH has a special I'll remember this.

Was tempted to get one but glad I didn't.

Only after thinking about it did I realise we were the test subjects (only we paid for it). We have a great opportunity to be the people that will make this (and future devices) better for this company. Maybe it was a mistake, but it could also be the greatest step forward. Of course we won't be able to reap the rewards directly, but we can help facilitate growth in this sector by aiding this project on.

(I haven't eaten in a while, so I'm feeling very lightheaded. It could be why I'm so forgiving )

I've found my latest irritation with the phone...

Attempting to browse my pictures or to select one via instagram / whatsapp:

Whenever I try and browse the pics, it refreshes the list with the latest thumbnails but each time it refreshes, the list jumps to the top. So if you have more than 9 pics in a folder it keeps jumping back to the top everytime a thumbnail loads. It's annoying as all hell.

Did the latest OTA update now it started installing all kinds of Apps..

Filled up internal storage 44mb left..

^^ This

Here too... also about to get a couple of these T1s... read through this thread and the bleating CEOs terse responses I too will pass. What a ballache device.

Found an app that works around the Wifi roaming issues I was having - the name says it all:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.heleron.wifiroamingfix

I can now use the Wifi network at home: I've tested this successfully across 4 Access Points and it transitions smoothly: no more 'indicator-displayed-but-no-internet-access' for me!

I don't suppose it would fix other wifi-related issues reported here; but for me, it finally makes this phone perfectly usable day-to-day.

Would love to see a related fix built into the firmware without requiring 3rd-party apps, though!

Super disappointed now in zest mobile, I understood that there were teething problems etc. I thought that the open letter was a bit childish but after their message to me this morning it seems as if they don't care that people have problems and are not admitting that it is their fault. If I was handing the message I sent I would have replied with a brief "We would love to help you re-partition your phone, please pop by ..." and give the customer a good feeling instead they went all defensive and don't admit that they stuffed up with the whole internal storage thing.

ME:
Hi there, I hear if we are in the Durban area we can come and get the internal storage fixed by coming in and having it flashed. What is the process for this ?
Thanks

Zest Mobile:
Hi there. It is not to "fix" anything as the device does not have a problem. We are, however, prepared to make a few exceptions for users and allow them to have their devices reprogrammed to allow 50/50 partitioning

Has anybody here returned their device successfully ?

So... I can't use all 8gb of storage because of that one silly partition, I'm going to end up with that one partition maxed out, and having left over space on the other partition which will effectively be useless, they don't think anything needs fixing?

Another joke I see.

Rest assured that our technical team are working around the clock to fix any issues you may be facing and to improve your Zest experience. Thank you for your support and understanding!

@Zestmobile, do you still stand behind that statement? Are you really on our side? 1.5% might be your device failure (which is well below industry standards), but if that's all the metrics you're going to use, then you're setting yourself up for a larger letdown.

You speak of the Accelerate; how many people would purchase the device if they see how you handle problems/treat users? Don't commit seppuku. Do this right, honourably and fairly.

Fully agree, was also tempted but reading through 39 pages of issues....., i also cannot see that the failure rate is only 1.5%, it sounds more in the region of 50%, a poll will be interesting.
And a CEO with an attitude like that??, shocking.

That letter by the CEO was extremely whiny, would would have been somewhat mitigated if they had actually managed to address the issues users are having. The fact that they haven't means that consumers are not unjustly targeting the company, it means that what they're saying is true. So David Lindeque, put on your big boy pants and sort out your product.

Yes Zest - the device doesn't have a problem. That's why you've since changed your setup to partition all new devices 50/50, and are busy deploying agents around the country to handle repartitioning of existing devices. So you're fixing a non-problem? Treat your customers like idiots much?

I ordered my Zest T1 over the weekend and got it yesterday... I admit, reading this thread whilst waiting for it to arrive made me a bit anxious. I've been using a Samsung Galaxy Pocket for the past two years and figured I could use an upgrade. Considering I paid R900 for it (and its selling for R800 or so now), I would say that I got a good deal getting the Zest promotion. I haven't looked into how much the data alone would have cost, but its safe to say I put in maybe R600 extra over the Pocket to get a Zest? I think the specs the Zest gives is worth more than R600?

I'm very happy so far, but I want to test out Google Maps and see if it crashes etc.

The partitioning is the only things I am battling with - Has anyone managed to get theirs repartitioned? I see Zest Mobile is doing repartitioning (I might have missed some stuff whilst sifting the thread, but I don't think I read anywhere about how to get your device repartitioned).

Another question: when the device went through QC, what were the parameters? ie. Which apps did you have installed? Did you mimic real-world use?

Storage used with approx. app data (Percentage based on 1.00GB, actual storage 0.98GB)
* Google Chrome - 8% (6% app, 2% data)
* Google search app [GAPPS] - 5.5% (4% app, 1.5% data)
* Google Play Services [GAPPS] - 4% (2.4% app, 1.6% data)
* BBM [update] - 5% (3.6% app, 1.4% data)
* Twitter [update] - 4.7% (1.7% app, 3% data)
* Maps [GAPPS]- 2.6% [I have not even used the app, so the data usage is low] (2.4% app, 0.2% data)
* Play Store - 1.1% (1% app, 0.1% data)
These base apps take a total of 30.9% of the storage [Not including wallpapers, and other bundled apps]

Then there are the system apps (no app/data breakdowns)
* Settings - 2%
* Google Text to Speech - 2%
* Android System - 2%
* Dialer - 1.1%
* Messaging - 0.9%
... The rest get boring. Altogether, that accounts for 19% of the storage space.

Then users want to be able to use other apps (because we have the right to do so). Now as we know, apps nowadays are not small. And some of these apps cannot be moved to the phone storage.

That means with the standard installed apps & services, you are left with 50% or 500MB, excluding internal services and so on.

These are just overview checks. I have not gotten into all the details of what the system uses and so on.

I think I'm one of the most vocal, negative guys here regarding the T1.

However, this phone does have potential- I wouldn't have bought one if I didn't believe this.

It also has a lot of issues that were 'addressed' only I feel that it wasn't- also the way they went about attempting to address these issues leaves a lot to be desired.
I've also heard Zest will repartition the storage but to date no one has come forward yet to confirm they've had this done and what the results are. Until that happens I will remain sceptical and negative because I'm still not seeing progress.

As a side note, it has been more than 48 hours since @Zestmobile has made a public statement on this post 09 July 2014 10:10, and last seen on Facebook 10 July 2014 20:38
