Zest T1

I'm a few days late. :D
Yup, I see I did forget the _UPDATE part at the end. I was looking under Wireless Update instead of About Phone.

Glad to see you came right, AzharK. ^_^

Finally got my refund reflecting in my account this morning, thus ends the fail of my Zest experience.

I've been using my Zest as a portable WiFi hotspot for a while now and it works great for that purpose. It's an OK phone, I am a bit annoyed at times with it force-closing applications and then not giving any reason / feedback for the closing, but, at the price point, I don't think it's too bad. If this was my primary phone, I'd be rather unhappy, but, fortunately, I have an older Sony that's still going strong and that I now use as my primary device.

I won't be buying anything from Zest again though, that's for sure, but I don't feel ripped off. I can't call this a fail, as the device does sort-of work, but it is a good lesson in you get what you pay for. For people that bought this as a primary device though, I can imagine it's quite a disappointment.

It is my primary device- I do have a Galaxy Nexus that is still hundreds, but I haven't touched it in months.
I know I bitched a lot about this phone- specifically the software. But ever since flashing it with the repartition software, it hasn't skipped a beat- not one I care to remember anyway.

But even so, I think my next phone will be a Nexus again...

Agreed, that repartition fix did more than just repartition the software. They patched just about all the bugs.

As for buying another one?
They eventually fixed their software bugs, which is more than what I can say about Samsung and the way they view their low end devices. So yeah, I am pretty happy with my device, and would quite happily recommend one to someone looking for a budget phone. The other thing is it does create a bit of competition for the Naspers monster and their evil plans with the gobii. And we all know what a Naspers controlled monopoly looks like...

Anyone managed to get Hangouts Voice Calling working?

Yep, video called a friend on hangouts over the weekend without a hitch. The video stream glitched a bit, but worked. Did not try a voice call yet. Still need to try the dialer.

Morning folks

I am considering buying one of these, I just have a question that I am unable to find an answer to.

Can I flash a custom rom? Specifically cyanogenmod?

No one has done that (yet). However the Zest Facebook page has liked Cyanogenmod, so maybe it is in development. You should ask them on Facebook.

Dont buy this phone. You will have a problem and then you will be out of warranty for rooting it.
I'll rather suggest buying a cheaper equivelent phone (there are plenty out there) and use cynogen on that instead.

Thanks for the advise.

I'm using a note 3 at the moment but I have the N900 which doesn't have support for Cyanogenmod. So I'm looking for a budget device that I can put it on.

The moto g from Motorola is also a phone you should have a look at. They just released a new version so the older one will probably be offered at a discount... Only caveat is that the phone not officially in SA and has to be imported (Orange store is probably the cheapest).

Imho it is probably the best budget android around.

+1

anyone have a problem with youtube videos freezing with the sound continuing but when the video unfreezes it is behind the audio?

Battery drained. Not charging or turning on. Logged a support call at Afrihost so long. In the mean time does anybody have any ideas on how to get it going again?

I've had the problem a few times but eventually comes back on and continues charging.

Chrarged my phone last night to this morning. When I woke up and wanted to use the phone it kept on reprompting me saying phone is 100% charged. Had to restart to get it working

(I still have a significant amount of catching up to do in this thread....)

The search seems to work less well than I hoped... (Searching for "zest t1 source code" find thousands of threads related to only one word annoyingly...)

Did anyone try to get the kernel source code out of Zest yet?

Mine is slightly buggy... (apps can't access SD card, YouTube issues (the freezing video thing), Google Maps crashes...)

It performs well in general though... (And I have another phone when the issue gets too bad (Google Maps...))

(I'm on my second one though, the first one had a display issue after a while, seems like it was a loose cable...)
