You're right, Vodacom NEVER drop data prices on their own accord. That is why we still have the highest mobile data prices in the world. :rolleyes:

When we dropped from R40/MB to 60c/MB overnight (world first), it was because of legislation and the current pricing of less than 20c/MB was forced as well. :rolleyes:

But dont you guys charge R2 per MB? I thought only virgin mobile charged 60c per MB regardless of bundle/usage.

Oh he is talking about in bundle rates - on monthly subscriptions of R289+. It's all just a matter of semantics.

But I committed the most horrible of sins - talking to him directly :eek: And don't ever assume that Vodacom is in the business of telephony. Hell no! Broadband is their only real business.

Got confused with that other bunch over at myBroadband where we discuss all things related to broadband in SA. Quite a nice bunch. You should pop in.

I think it's rich BECAUSE you're a Vodacom representative making a comment about lower telecoms in SA, because let's face it, you've taken advantage of the situation and us from day 1, high horses, world firsts and trumpets aside, your call costs, data costs, or far from reasonable.

And your HSDPA network is so over saturated it's almost impossible to even get a 1Mbit connection, that is if you can stay connected for for than 30 minutes, which I never could.

That's why it got the can, I was almost stupid enough to get Vodacom WiMax, I will admit I did call, but the business centre rep didn't know how to help me, he took my details and said someone would call me with info, which they never did, so I took it as a sign, not to repeat past mistakes.

And you can't exactly blame your call costs on anyone but yourself can you? You guys set the precedent WAY back.
 
If MTN suddenly changed their standard out of bundle rates from R2 to lets say 19c,im willing to bet my life that Vodacom would very quickly follow suite.
Also the first company to do that would get that credibility.
Im willing to bet that even before Seacoms arrival,there is still profit to be made out of 19c per meg.

What a lot of people don't realise is that I (and VC) fully agree that data prices must come down. And will. The pricing as we see today is driven by the input costs and only when we get this sorted will prices continue dropping.

Self-provisioning will help greatly but it's a long process. Seacom and WACS will contribute as well.

So it's coming together but it's a way still.

Since I got involved in mobile data we've seen prices drop by a factor 200. (R40/MB -> 20c/MB) And speeds have increased by a factor 50 (50kb/s -> 2500kb/s+). So price/performance on the mobile networks have increased by over a factor 10000!

Not too shabby, but we all tend to forget how far we've come in a very short period. Or at least the mobile data side of things. Not sure if fixed line have shown a factor 10K improvement. ;)

Sorry, personally I don't buy that. What about call costs then? Those justified by input costs as well? Vodacom's FAT profits say otherwise.

Answer me this, won't you? And it is a very relevant question.

Name a couple of data-only-networks (worldwide, let alone SA) that is profitable. One or two will do.
 
@V3g - name a couple of data networks that ARE profitable - not is - thought you would like to know seeing as you like things neat and tidy :)
