The DStv and TopTV decoder price war

how do they slash the installation prices when the installations are done by a 3rd party?

They cover the cost. The important thing for them is gaining that consumer in the long term.

provide a proper Sports + MM1,2 set for R99/m and you will win the Nation over. But DSTV won't do that because so many subscribers will downgrade. Will TopTV do that?
I for one don't have DSTV - my experience is that the price does not warrant the trash - the only saving grace for DSTV is the PVR -lol

Question is, Can toptv do that?
Multichoice own all sport rights in SA.

This will be up for review and TOPTV can complain to the competition commision of it isn't allowed the opurtunity to compete for sporting rights.

When abouts will it go up for review?

Exclusive rights to broadcast are negotiated with each sporting company (i.e SANZAR for super 14, etc) and the timeframe is unique to each deal signed. But I imagine 1 year deals are the standard

I'm not sure how credible this is as it came from the guy that did our installation, but they'll apparently be able to approach the competition commission when they hit 150 000 active subscribers. The alternative is to wait until MultiChoice's hold on sports rights are up and are up for bid again which afaik, is 2015.

ICASA should force Multichoice to allow other operators access to sport content. IIRC, the same thing was done in the UK with SKYSports; SKY had to let the other operators offer SKYSports as a package.

I dont have any inside information, but they don't negotiate sport rights as a whole. They negotiate with each sports company individually, and I doubt they managed to negotiate each contract to expire in exactly the same year

You are talking about something different here. Sky Sports in a content channel owned by Sky/Fox. Other distributers (such as Virgin, etc. Sky is also a distributer) can licence the content.
The equivalent is TopTV licencing SuperSport. Which they might do if ICASA forces it.
However, what is more likely is TopTV growing their own TopSport channels

Yep, I'm talking about Multichoice licensing out SS to other operators. With the content, power and consumer base that Multichoice have, I honestly don't see TopSport becoming competition unless ICASA intervene.

On the plus side for Multichoice, licensing SuperSport out will increase viewership which will lead to an uptake in revenue from advertisements.

If Multichoice offered something like MNET, via satellite, with it's sports and latest shows/movies for the around R250pm, I'd be interested... DSTV premium is packed with way too much junk/2nd-rate content to be worth almost R600pm!

nothing like a bit of competition, now all we need is a inflatable pool with mud in it...mmm... and maybe some hot models to represent the sides, we can have a good mud fight :)

The question is: Is Top TV worth R250pm?

I had a look at the online TV guide and it looked like most of the series and movies are outdated :(

This price war is going to be fail. TopTV competes against the lower DSTV products...so DSTV will shift the prices there and leave the full bouquet at rip-off prices.

Not sure if it's just me - but I've never even looked or cared at decoder and installation costs of either service. Whether it's a once of R200,00, R500.00 or R700.00 is irrelvant to me.

I look at the monthly subscription.
