I finally understand what the author meant by "you have to try it to see what the fuss is about". While my experience was not with the iPhone it was similar.
I recently purchased an HTC HD2. I have never had an interest in Android but because the HD2 can load Android via the SD card - I did. What a move. Within 24 hours I was totally off WinMo and an Android 2.2 addict. Because of the huge marketplace you can consume data very quickly so I too use WiFi for most of my needs.
Android have an app on the marketplace called "Tasker" and enables you to configure you phone as you want. So I created some profiles.
Home - Using GPS and within 200m of my house this profile is activated. When activated it enables WiFi automatically. When "Home" deactivates, the WiFi switches off automatically. The same with BlueTooth. When at "Home" it switches off and when "Home" deactivates BlueTooth switches on and then connects to my car kit.
WiFi - When this profile activates (either manually or when Home is activated), 3G is switched off. When I am away from "Home", WiFi switches off which causes this profile to terminate. When it terminates 3G is automatically switched on.
This app alone blew me away and got me hooked Android. And it is just a sample of what is out there

With these prices of the iPhone now I may just try one. I also want to see what the hype is all about. I am not sure if the Apple Marketplace has an application like Tasker but I hope so. Would make life a lot easier to manage internet connections with our measly data bundles we get (my HD2 contract only gives me 75MB PM!!)
