iPhone 4 - data bundles and pricing investigated

I think Kingrob showed in that thread you can get a Samsung Galaxy S with 100 SMS, 120 MIN, per second billing & 300MB data - comes to +- R479. So in the end you basically get just as good a deal if you buy the stuff seperately.

Anyway yeah I agree. Undoubtedly the networks gotta up their game. Internet costs too much on 3G. Cell C is changing that slowly so the other networks have to respond soon!

On Vodacom (details from their website):
Samsung Galaxy S on a talk 120 is R374 pm
mymeg 175 is R119 pm

That alone is more then the lowest priced iPhone deal. You dont get just as good a deal if you buy separate.

On the iPhone deals, the data is basically a free add on.

I've settled on getting an HTC Desire, though I'm a little intimidated by the R2.00/meg cost of bandwidth. To manage the cost, I've decided to use the WiFi capabilities on my phone as often as I can, so when I'm in the office or at home, I should be able to save some money on the bandwidth costs of using the phone. Still, it's sad that we have to constantly worry about out utilisation this way. I'd love to be able to just forget about it and use the phone fully and freely.

Can't wait to get my hands on the iphone 4 to test.

The reason that most of these bundles are around 150megs is because the average iphone user consumes 150megs of data. It's not as high as the article suggests.

Yeah, I wish MTN or Vodacom would match the Cell C data bundle - 2gb of data a month on the iPhone would be awesome.

I called Vodacom recently. The R379 is just for the iphone. You gotta pay an extra R275p/m for the Top Up 275 which adds up to a monthly payment of R654p/m with only 110MB of data. Is this worth it? R654p/m? On the other hand MTN offers an all inclusive package of R375p/m with 150Mb of data that will be halved to 75Mb at the end of the year. Again I believe both companies' pricing especially the data packages were way outta tune. If i am to buy a smartphone i would definitely want to use it as i use my pc at home or at work i.e. check and send emails, play online games, use social site, news, download videos, Youtube, twitter, download stuff etc but with their data pricing none of the above will be possible. I am glad that MTN offers the Iphone because Vodascum would have charged us close to a grand for the Iphone. Now i guess the competition has to be on the data packages. Lets just wait and see what both companies have to offer. My money will be on MTN increasing the data packages to something like 500Mb to 1G because Vodascum seems to be playing a following game.

No this is not true.

Its R379pm for entire contract which includes Iphone4 16Gig, R275 airtime and 110meg data bundle each month.

Information is direct from Vodacom as I chatted with them yesterday.

You can view the deal on Vodacom's homepage.

I finally understand what the author meant by "you have to try it to see what the fuss is about". While my experience was not with the iPhone it was similar.
I recently purchased an HTC HD2. I have never had an interest in Android but because the HD2 can load Android via the SD card - I did. What a move. Within 24 hours I was totally off WinMo and an Android 2.2 addict. Because of the huge marketplace you can consume data very quickly so I too use WiFi for most of my needs.
Android have an app on the marketplace called "Tasker" and enables you to configure you phone as you want. So I created some profiles.
Home - Using GPS and within 200m of my house this profile is activated. When activated it enables WiFi automatically. When "Home" deactivates, the WiFi switches off automatically. The same with BlueTooth. When at "Home" it switches off and when "Home" deactivates BlueTooth switches on and then connects to my car kit.
WiFi - When this profile activates (either manually or when Home is activated), 3G is switched off. When I am away from "Home", WiFi switches off which causes this profile to terminate. When it terminates 3G is automatically switched on.

This app alone blew me away and got me hooked Android. And it is just a sample of what is out there :) With these prices of the iPhone now I may just try one. I also want to see what the hype is all about. I am not sure if the Apple Marketplace has an application like Tasker but I hope so. Would make life a lot easier to manage internet connections with our measly data bundles we get (my HD2 contract only gives me 75MB PM!!)

nowhere on the mtn site or contract does it say this - nor can the people in the store or call centre confirm this - id like to know where people heard this???

Data

If you use apps on a smartphone you gonna use data. Cellular providers should get with the program and offer more data.
