New Cell C data bundles: Pricing compared with Vodacom, MTN and 8ta

So for the 2Gig bundle I would be better off with VC or MTN?

not competitive at all, I'll get the promotional bundle and find an alternative when thats done

What a rip off. I was expecting much more after those sensational 2GB and 5GB offerings. R50 for 100mb??? Come on CellC, you can do much better than that

Is Cell C using high top-up rates on the larger data bundles as a deterrent to heavy users - thus limiting network congestion to keep data transfer rates high?

@rpm seeing as both MTN and CellC seem to have had the decency to realise that customers should not be paying premium for IB = OOB rates, would it not have been better to compare them to the Vodacom "Advanced" bundles?

Good point - but depends on user management !

Vodacom Advanced is unfortunately only available on 24 month contracts which means the comparison will not be fair. All of the other bundles are prepaid as well.

Why isn't it called "Flat Rate" bundles? There is nothing "Advanced" about it at all...

Man why cant I buy a data bundle that is valid for a year ? . I would love something like that for my iphone contract . When I go over the 110Mb it starts using from my 2Gb bundle . Is there something like that out there from any of these providers ? . As far as I know the data bundles are valid for a month , if not I stand corrected :)

Interesting... MTN's the only one who doesn't appear to hammer their prepaid OOB customers with huge punitive fees for usage...

Nope !

Broadband Advanced offers the same out-of-bundle and in-bundle data rates and provides HSPA+ with HSUPA for FREE! Contract, Top Up and Prepaid customers pay the same rate per bundle however the data speed at which you connect is dependent on the capabilities of the access device or cellphone that you use to connect, as well as the coverage in the area from which you connect. If you frequently go out of bundle and want to pay the same in-bundle and out-of-bundle rate, then this is the option for you.

For the comparison to be fair you should use Vodacom Prepaid Advanced Data Rate.

Are there any providers who offer some kind of data roll-over at all? Something like what you're talking about here would be AWESOME, but any kind of roll-over would help already.

Cell C's pricing model is really UTS. Somebody who needs 72Gb/yr (6Gb/month) would pay R3k (60Gb modem package) + R3k for top-ups = R6k!! :wtf:

So just buy a 60Gb package @ R3k plus a 24Gb sim @ R1k = R4k

Yes, I know the top-up is to tide you over till the next bundle kicks in, but you do that 4 times in a year and you're even.

Sorry Cell C - this is an EPIC FAIL

I can just imagine the smiles and "I told you so's" at Vodacom and MTN!

Just out of interest, what happens if you don't have a bundle of any kind and you use the web from your phone. What are the rates then? I'm guessing it's not the OOB rate since they all seem to assume that you had some kind of bundle in the first place. Any ideas?

EDIT: And here I'm talking about MTN specifically, since the other providers have that punitive Prepaid OOB rate that I mentioned earlier.

Ah, found it. MTN charges R2.00 per meg if you don't have a data bundle linked to your account. So it kinda makes sense to have at least some kind of data bundle on your account, even if it's the R10 for 10 meg one.

Interesting choice of ordering in the table. Where possible, logically it should have been ordered from cheapest to most expensive. But hey, perhaps that's just my logic *shrugs*

It would be very nice to have an article in which Lars & Co explain their reasoning on these bundle prices. Seriously out-of-line with their promotional offer, and seriously out-of-line with their recent PR mantra.

It just looks like they have leapt back into the unholy cartel after fooling consumers with a beacon of hope.

R2/Mb FTL.

I'm surprised by CellC's pricing, looks like they pushing people in contracts... business hates users that jump ship for the next big thing! Looks like they aren't keen on too many subscribers... and they don't want a price war!
