Hey Hey

The last 2 weeks I've been having trouble connecting to mweb's news server. It's been working fine for the past 5-6 months. Now it takes 2 to 3 days (if I'm lucky) to get 1 connection going, until i have to restart my PC or some such, then it starts all over again. I've tried both news.mweb.co.za and 196.28.78.229. The IP, however, has been doing this for the last 2 months though.
Browsing is as good as always, and I can't think it has something to do with seacom since the news server is local and many other people don't have this problem.

I tried connecting via my laptop as well, but still does the same, so the problem is not with my PC. I also tried connecting to WA's news server with my WA account, and that works fine, so the problem is not with my router or app either.

Any advice on this would really be appreciated!
I'm on an uncapped account, btw.

Thanks! ;)

Hi Empie,

Please PM me your details so I can look into this for you.
Also advise what application you are using to connect to the news server.

I am not aware of any issues at the moment but would still like to investigate this for you.

kind regards,
MWEB Guy

what usenet client are you using?

if your not using sabnz switch now!!

was pulling max speed this morning from mweb news server with sabnz, and yes usenet client does make a difference, i cant even connect to mweb news server with alt binz.

Ah, I'm using Alt.Binz. But it has always worked very well for me, so not sure why it will fail on me now. I tried using GrabIt as well, and it doesn't work either. Maybe I'll give sabnz a shot...

Hi Empie,

I have received your PM.
Please see my reply and let me know via PM if you have any feedback.

Kind regards,
MWEB Guy

Thanks for the quick reply Guy!

I'm at work at the moment, but will try sabnz when i get home tonight.
Will let you know how it goes. :)

Thanks again!

SABnz doesn't work either :(
Tried with both server addy's again. When testing the server it says "Connection Successful'. But under status it still shows 0 connections, and ofcourse nothing is downloading. It's been running for more than an hour without any activity except for a few kb's that shows under the history tab, which I assume is just the data from all the connection attempts.
I hope Mr Mweb Guy can sort me out quick quick :)

I've now reinstalled all of the apps, reset my router, disabled anti-virus and firewalls... yet still nothing. Connections just keep popping on and off with nothing downloading in that 1 or 2 seconds when its connected. And yet my WA account still works fine.
So the problem can't be on my end, unless I'm reeeaally missing something. But since everyone else have no problems with mweb's server, the problem is not there either...
Maybe it's just in my area for some reason?
Or maybe they throttling me like crazy? I don't know anymore. :(
Any other port I can maybe try, instead of 119?
The last option will be to change from mweb to another ISP with uncapped...maybe Afrihost? Are they any good btw?

I have been having similar issues with news.mweb.co.za and I'm also using alt.binz. I find that if I leave it on it will keep trying to connect and occasionally when it does, I get decent speeds.

I am under the impression that mweb may be limiting the amount of people who can access the server, so as soon as a slot opens up, whoever leaves their indexer on will get the next available connection. Perhaps its time for mweb to get a second news server or up the amount of connectible slots.

Does this make sense or am I missing something?

I think you might be right. Every now and then when I was trying with SABnz, when I ran the Server Test, It gave me a 'Connection Successful'. But a few times it gave me a 'No Index List' or something like that.
And once every 2 or 3 days a connection will actually hold on and download at decent speed, but only until something interrupts the connection (restarting PC, etc). Then it's another long wait... Managing to download about 300mb every 3 days is really not how I want to use an uncapped account.

I must say i thought the same, now i just Q my episodes. Grabit runs for 2 3 days, if i must work online i just use Netlimiter to throttle Grabit so i have enough bandwidth to do my work but Grabit still runs.

I have had this issue too where everyone else seems to be fine on news server. When I switched accounts it worked fine.

All I did was to restart router to refresh external IP and it seemed to work...

Incase anyone was wondering... I STILL can't download 1 bit from the news server, and it's been almost 4 weeks since the problem started. I tried every possible thing anyone has suggested. I even borrowed a friend's router and tested it with that. I tried torrents in the meantime, but they just filthy slow things. I'm lucky to get 2KB/s. Most other times, there's just nothing.
So I tried all possible troubleshooting on my end, with no results. I tried the other news servers with WA and IS, and they work 100%. The problem can thus NOT be on my end. Even when I do get a connection, the speed is stuck on 0kb/s.

Can it maybe be something to do with the Seacom cable? Maybe it effected some area's more than others? If that is the case, isn't the cable suppose to be fixed by now?
Please, I'm really out of options here. Any other suggestions will be appreciated. I will try to contact Mweb again, but they havn't been much help thus far. They only keep telling me that the news server is running fine. I KNOW it's running fine, so help me get BACK on it!

P.S. I just got this error msg with SABnz -> Cannot connect to server news.mweb.co.za:119 [502 Cannot connect to NNTP server 196.28.78.229 (196.28.78.229:119), connect error 10060]

Don't know if that will help?

Good morning Empie, please let me know how you are connecting to the news server? (via Ip or news.mweb)

news.mweb.co.za according to the quoted post ;) and yes it's worse than overseas servers the last while :)

news.mweb.co.za - This week 5.2 G
private - This week 7.1 G

I've tried both, Mweb Guy. And I know everything works from your end, you already tested it for me. But everything is right at my end as well. So the problem is somewhere in between, which can only be my mweb uncapped account itself. I need you to pleeeease check it out for me, and not just tell me again that 'everything works on your end' and leave it at that. Something is clearly wrong if it just stopped working one day. I've been patient for a very long time now, but being unable to properly use an uncapped account for almost a month now is just not funny anymore.
The only reason I'm still hanging with mweb is because I've gotten mostly bad reviews about the other uncapped deals from other ISP's.
If anyone can suggest a decent one, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!
