A co-worker left her iPad on the plane late yesterday and even after reporting shortly after disembarking, due to time wasted by Kulula, it eventually found it's way into someone else hands. Her husband started up the find app on his iPhone and because the device was in flight mode all he could do was set it to lock and prompt him once online. This morning it came alive in Delft and while opening a case with the police near the airport it started moving. The police seemed quite keen to help and assigned 3 plain clothes officers and an unmarked car and went iPad hunting. By then it had moved to Mitchell's Plain and then a 3rd location deeper in. Once it had settled they managed to pin point the house it was in and the cops stormed in. The occupants claimed to know nothing about the missing iPad. The officers then asked him what exactly they were looking for, so he fired up the app on his iPhone again and made the iPad play sounds. Lo and behold there was the missing iPad in a room under some magazines much to the surprise of the thieves! :D

Good to know how handy this app can be especially with a willing police force behind it :)

awesome!! - just helped another colleague setup his FNB ipad so that he can locate it with "find my..."

Cool story & well done SAPS for following it up

Yes, but it's not free on the 3G unlike the iPhone 4. Don't know about iPad

By not free I mean you have to subscribe to mobile me

The work around for the iPhone 3G owners if you have a iPad or iPhone 4 in the household is to sign up for the free mobileme on the newer device. You can then install Find my iPhone on the iPhone 3G and login with the account your created on the iPad/iPhone 4.
