My whatsapp was going to expire this month, the 27th and according to them, I was suppose to pay for the next year. I got myself ready to uninstall the app when that happen, cause I'm using Gtalk more.
I just got a message: "Whatsapp service extended". Ichecked whatsapp account info and saw that my expiration date is now 11 of August 2012. So I got an extra 8 months.

Anybody else got their service extended, gratis?

You telling me the $1 a year Whatsapp costs wouldn't have been worthwhile for you?

I have already prepaid for another year.

Quite happy to pay a massive R16 a year for unlimited texting.

My free year will expire in May, but I'll be happy to pay for it - it's a great app.

Meh, I just paid 2 dollars for an extension until the end of 2013.

Not complaining though, it's great app that I use everyday.

huh? first I hear of having to pay yearly. I bought it on the app store once and it's still working...

I am talking under correction but on iOS its unlimited as you buy they app (Unless you got it for free this December during the holiday special like I did)

All other platforms you pay yearly(Android, BB, Symbian and WP) as they get the app for free.

Even the fact that I have the App is in my iTunes library and pre-installed on my SE Xperia Play, I never bothered to even open it as all my friends are on gTalk so I just use that.

iOS users pay a once off fee. Android users have to pay yearly

This Android user haven't paid yet.
And I'm quite happy with Gtalk, all my friends on there. I only get the occational message on whatsapp.

Whatsapp saves me about R100 a month in smses... The best IM app ever in the history of mankind...

LOL, Whatsapp is but one of many IM's, I think it can be called "Very popular", but not the best.

Agreed, the best would be something like IM+

Multi-platform multi-service IM on steroids...

Use IM+ to connect to Beep, MSN/Windows Live®, Facebook®, Skype™, Google Talk™, Yahoo!®, AIM®/iChat, ICQ®, Jabber®, MySpace, Twitter, VKontakte, Mail.Ru Agent and Yandex IM at the same time! Not to mention, it works on ALL popular mobile platforms.
IM+ has the widest selection of unique features that you won't find in any other IM client. Plus, there's no cost per message, so you can send photos, videos, voice msgs, and IM for free and save loads on MMS and SMS with Beep!

Pity about the price.....

BBM, Google Talk and iMessage are all good messengers, but they are all kinda platform specific - even in the case of GTalk as there is no (afaik) native app for iOS or Symbian.

Whatsapp does a brilliant job at addressing the issue of cross-platform IM without complicating the matter with yet another account and username/password combination.

While IM+ might be a handy app to have on your phone, I wouldn't call it the 'best' as it is probably too complicated for the average (and I really mean average here!) person to set up. My girlfriend's mother, for instance, set Whatsapp up herself and regularly uses it. I can't imagine her doing the same with IM+ and adding all those other IM accounts just to get a fair portion of her contacts on her IM list.

After 6 years of using Google Talk, I have 31 contacts who are mostly my tech-oriented friends. After 9 months of using Whatsapp, I have 61 Whatsapp contacts who includes basically everyone with whom I regularly communicate.

I appreciate Whatsapp's simplicity as it means I can also talk to all my non-techy friends :D

Got the message last night... also extended to August, I think... i was sleepy at the time.

Using a Blackberry.

Well something happened to mine.
I got a message saying something about my service being extended a while back, didn't recognize the number so i deleted the message thinking it was spam.

I go and check my license and it expires in 2021 :-/.
It also says i have paid?? No idea how it happened.
