Vodacom’s new Smart contracts compared

"Red contracts"? Is that a prophecy one can expect regarding their bank balance [-]if[/-] when the OOB shark bites?

Honestly not a fan of these new packages. They already overpriced as is, now being forced into SMS' etc. Voice I can use, Data ok, SMS'? yeah I send less than 5 per month, I guess they need to subsidize the losses they make on sms nowdays for all the guys on BBM, Whatsapp etc.

Again 8ta and Cell C look to have better packages, Vodacom is a year behind as far as competitiveness

It says in the table it includes a smart phone. Which one?

How does this compare to Smart Standard 229 for example? I got a Note 2, 75 minutes, 150 sms and 150 MB. OOB is R1/MB. That's R400/month.

@purple: I use the smses. My mother and housemate don't have smart phones.

What are the OOB rates? With Vodacom you have to factor those costs in, as they're a distinct possibility...

R1/MB

Yet, there are still out-of-bundle rates: voice calls cost up to R1.70 per minute, data is billed at the punitive charge of R1 per MB and SMSs cost up to 80c.

@bio yes people still use SMS that I certainly know. Sadly these are Vodacom's top tier packages, packages to compete with Cell C and 8ta, which are supposed to be for their mass postpaid clients.

These are still laughable packages at best, to renew my contract I'll be paying R400 to R450 for 75mins, 75MB's and 150 SMS'? Slash the SMS' down to 20-50, and add more data! These are appalling value for money, or Vodacom must bring in other packages that are modern and competitive for a more data driven environment!

I'd be a lot happier if they swapped the SMS's and data allocations around. Still not quite good enough, but it would be more balanced for a smart phone.

i use up my 500mb bundle on cellc in the first two weeks. if i was on vodacom, i'd take the sim out and hide it for next month. at R1/mb i still wouldn't like that shark attack.

i see that Vodafone UK also launched this similar services. For the unlimited calls, unlimited sms and 2 gig data the cost without a phone is 32 pound or R400 per month. This includes a free landline number that is connected to cell number and ring on the cell without any costs. Compare this to Vodacom at R2000 or 5 times more.

I'm mostly in wifi zones. With my previous iPhone 4 I got 500 MB a month and it rolled over for 60 days. I never went OOB with that. Left mobile data on all the time (in retrospect not a wise thing to do). Now with my Note 2 and 150 MB data I always leave mobile data off and only turn it on when I need it.

Can't take a chance with OOB. Those rates can really fsck up your life!

The best option would be to have pricing for each bundle type i.e. voice, SMS, data and let people choose what they want (like Cell C). If people really make use of their smart phones (and don't have access to wifi), then anything less than 500MB is basically useless.

Let me see....if I take a :

Talk 75 (R189)
Bolt-on a 100 SMS bundle (R33)
Bolt-on MyGig1 internet promo (R149)

my amount comes to : R371.

And that is better than ANY of the "red" packages.

LOL @ Vodacom!! :D

Ok, add a Samsung Galaxy S3, which will cost me an extra R149 a month on a Talk 75, then it comes to : R520.

The Smart XL gives you 400MB data a month, but costs R699.

I still win. :D
