So I saw a few questions surfacing over the past month regarding what happens to our Afrihost Mobile SIM card when we cancel. Does the SIM become deactivated forever or does it remain active for eg. a certain period of time allowing us to easily reactivate and load data on it again without the need to (one can dream hey) do the whole MDS courier thing again? This would in effect be similar to the "Pause this Service" functionality already being provided on some of their ADSL products allowing you to, as the name states, pause your service (and billing thereof) for up to 3 months and resume it at a click of a button.

Official word so far:
If you cancel the SIM the data and SIM will become de-active. Once you've cancelled the data you won't be able to top-up again on that SIM.

This is of course quite true in essence - once canceled the product is removed from your clientzone and therewith the top-up feature and everything that goes with it. The angle that I felt was still left unexplored was the state the SIM was left in after deactivation. I threw caution (and R29) to the wind and applied for an APN product to be activated on one of these deactivated SIMs. To my surprise the SIM sprang to life almost instantly. :D

Some caveats: This is not an official feature and the sim might still be slated for 'de-registration' or whatnot and merely takes some time to pass through this process. Will be keeping an eye on it...

And in other news:

The 'Pause this Service' is now available for the mobile products as well, with 6 months to boot noggal!

You can now temporarily 'Pause' your account for up to 6 full months with only a few clicks.
You can schedule a payment/service holiday from any point in the next month onwards - since you've already paid for this month. Perfect for when you're going to a remote island in Bali for a few weeks!

It is available under the Edit Package setting in ClientZone 2.0. :D

This is a bit confusing. If you deactivate the service on say the first or second day of a new month then I presume you are billed for the entire month. Do you need to submit the deactivation by the 24th of the previous month in order to prevent being billed for the new month?

I do not have first-hand experience of this so will be testing it out for next month.

This is what they have to say if you proceed further. Not exactly 100% clear with regards to billing...

Tell us when you'd like to commence your account pause
and when it will automatically re-activate again. If you
change your mind you can immediately re-activate your
account at any point.
Pause Start Date *
Pause End Date *
Reason *

Please note: Account Pauses are only effective from a future date for which you have
not pre paid service. i.e. Since you have already paid for this month, even if you select
today as the start date, your account pause will only be effective from the 1st of next
month.

You can however choose a date such as the 7th of the next month as your start date.

You will be billed the full amount of your account when un-paused.

Let us know if you get any further details. Usually you need to cancel before Afrihost processes their debit orders (by the 24th i.e. before the 25th) or you get charged for the following month.

No Contracts. No Catch
We don't believe in contracts. You aren't locked in and you can simply cancel before the 25th of the month. So we'll always be doing our best for you.

To pause the billing, it's best before we run our billing - so anytime before the 25th :)
At this stage, re-activating a cancelled SIM isn't possible.
