The Huawei B593 LTE discussion thread

thanks for replying, it is really appreciated. I have been using my Macbook Air to test, with both LAN and WLAN connections. I have also used my Samsung Galaxy Note on WLAN. My SIP phone works well, though.

I did have both external antenna, ( ice-cream stick type). when i removed one it went from 4 bar to 5, and it shows as a mixture of internal and external. it is now constant on 5 bars.
would an external make a difference, even if I am getting a 'full' signal? i don't mind investing if i am going to get anything over 20MB.
I am really confused......

Your devices shouldn't be the problem as they are all new technology. I have also heard that those paddle antenna's are pretty useless and that people get better results without them. What I meant by external antenna's though is not the ice cream paddle sticks you get with the device but rather proper external antenna's mounted outside. Another factor is the output of the tower that you connect to - for example - where I live I have two options (the one tower outputs 30megs and the other outputs 100megs). I connect to the 100meg tower and with 2 externally mounted antennae and good signal strength I only get 35Mbps download and around 10Mbps upload. Then there are people in Durbanville with no antenna's getting 50+Mbps download - it seems to be "luck of the draw" if you ask me. I havn't found a conclusive definitive answer yet. If anyone else knows why this I'd like to know.

I just bought one for my current 3G router and during the delivery which took 2 full weeks I decided to switch over to LTE.(In the coming week)

The Antenna supports frequencies from 690 to 2700Mhz

I would hate to see this Antenna go to waste if it turns out my signal is quite as favourable.

I have one LPDA11A antenna that I previously used on 3G and one ice cream paddle connected to my 593 - LTE signal is 5 bars most of the time - using Telkom mobile

And how about using just one external antenna connector?

Does it require both external connectors to be used or could I use the internal and external antenna simultaneously?

edit: but try forcing it to external antenna and compare with auto setting

Update: "Antenna detection" on the B593s-601

After doing some more experimentation on this issue, I made this short video which demonstrates how the antenna detection seems to operate on the B593s-601.
This follows on from the previous measurements here and the discussion that followed.

Practically, the video shows that when the B593s-601 is configured for automatic antenna detection, connecting any device with a DC resistance of around 1.2kΩ or below will cause the B593 to "see" it as an external antenna and try to use it for signal reception. The flat whip antennas that ship with the B593s-601 have 1.2kΩ DC resistance, so they will be detected and used, as will any antenna that has zero DC resistance (a "DC short").

As before, note that the auto-detection on the B593u-12/u-91 may work slightly differently. From Conrads's measurements, we already know that the DC bias voltage used on the B593-u91's SMA sockets is higher.
Also bear in mind that the B593 may or may not apply other criteria before finally deciding to utilise the external device.

On a more technical note, the following :

1) The bias networks for the two SMA ports are somewhat linked, so placing a load (ie a low resistance, or short-circuit) on one, will reduce the voltage measured on the other.

2) The internal circuitry that provides the DC bias voltage on the B593s-601's antenna ports produces about 1.8VDC (open-circuit voltage) and has a source resistance of around 25kΩ. This means that the current that flows when the antenna port is short-circuited is only some 70μA. Practically, this means that connecting anything with a comparable resistance (ie 25kΩ or less) will reduce the measured bias voltage by half or more. Connecting a 1.2kΩ resistor will collapse the voltage almost completely (to around 70mV).

So what according to the DC-short detection theory is your explanation why they had to change voltage in the newer model? Is detection circuit really so sophisticated, didn't work properly, it is why it had to be changed?

I am writing this as in the past you have formulated DC-short theories and now I see absolutely no theories, just measurements (I believe, didn't watch a scientific video).

Voltage meassured on B593 antenna ports is not for antenna detection. It is a power source for an active antenna.

Bad taste was presented when I was called a member of "Huawei design team" in derogatory manner. It hasn't been recalled or apologised. As a member of Huawei design team I tell you what is really inside Huawei front-end and you don't believe. You have a different opinion, fine. I just tell you that a voltage in question (which I asked you to meassure it, BTW) is not for antenna detection as an urban legend says and explain a real purpose, and you say it is attacking other personas when I ask you to improve your knowledge.

1. Filesystem (e.q. NTFS vs FAT32)?
2. Power requirements? If it is self-powered, then not your problem. Problem can be with supplying sufficient power to 2.5" drives taking power from USB host.
3. Size of the hard drive or partitioning.

You are obviously knowledgeable and can share your knowledge on this forum. It's the way you go about saying things that comes across as "attacking" or "being rude". Example below - an extract of your reply a few posts above:

If you read a lot of your previous posts, you will see that you are directly attacking certain persons. This is a site for knowledge and everyone gives input, no matter if it helps or not. Everyone contributes with their own opinions. Being sarcastic and rude is not for a forum site, no matter how clever that person might think he is....people come here to find out and learn, they don't know the answer to the questions that they might have, so they ask. Whomever replies does so on their own time and with their own knowledge and experience from what they have learned and experienced over time. The constant bickering and bad taste remarks is how children operate and should not have a place on this forum.....

I truly enjoy the input of specifically Jcheek and of the other members, including yourself (when you actually give valuable information).

Power is via USB from router. The drive does come on.

One TB should be recognised. I was thinking of the drive exceeding 2TB and/or formatted with GUID partition.

It cames on, but might be too slow or not properly initialized. Try self-powered USB 2.0 hub, but in some cases it can be problem of recognising the hub. If you have USB Y-cable, you can try to inject power directly to the hard drive.
