A friend of mine is asking advice on a gaming laptop. Max budget is around R13k.

I've found this one which seems to have pretty nice specs:

Cannot really find any more info online like reviews, etc. Did find some reviews for another Lenovo gaming laptop which seems quite positive.

Does anyone have one of these or have any idea if this is a good purchase?

TIA

I looked at the exact same laptop this morning! No reviews available though

Seems to be a region specific model, I'm guessing that's why there are so few reviews. It's still specced decently though so I don't really see an issue unless the screen is horrible or something.

This one uses the GTX760M though, the 860M seems like a much better option: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-860M-vs-GeForce-GTX-760M
True. I like the Y5070 more, but stock is hard to get.
I wonder why it is regional? The laptop doesn't even show on any Lenovo website.

PS: Don't ever use GPUBoss as a comparison for GPUs :p

Damn! I just saw the Y5080 comes with a HD screen (1920x1080) and the GPU has 4GB RAM (not that 4GB matters that much, but more is always welcome!)

The reason you can find reviews for this model is the fact that they have named it differently here in South Africa.

Its generally know as Lenovo y50, its the predecessor to the Lenovo y510.
IMO this is the best value for money laptop you can get so far.

I've been looking at this model (y50) for some time now and I'm glad to see they have released it here under another name.

Here is a link to the lenovo website for its specs:

Found this very nice video review

Thanks man! Will check the reviews!

On a side note, I found lenovo support to be great. They couriered me a new harddrive after mine died, took less than 12 hours to get it.

When you say Lenovo support, do you mean partserve?

A lot of the reviews state how bad the screen is... hmmmm

No Gigabit LAN, they don't say - probably 100Mbps. Limiting factor when transfering movies.

We have one at the office - arrived a couple of weeks ago. Any q's? Ask away!

Res is surprisingly low. I'll get the exact figures, but my T420 has higher res.
It has a 1920x1080 res, how's that low? It's the quality and viewing angels that are terrible according to reviews.

Hi, Where did you order from and is your GTX 860m the Maxwell (GM107) or Kepler (GK104) model?
