Hi Forumites!!!

There are many members that wonder how their Vodacom Wireless connection performs in comparison with other Wireless Broadband users.

If you have some spare time please do the Telkom speed test and give your area and tower you logon to, aslo state if you are using GPRS, EDGE or 3G. State wether you are connecting with a phone/modem (please give model and manufacturer name). Speed test URL: http://www.telkom.co.za/minisites/dsl/speed.html

Thanks and regards,

Mr.G

Sitting at the Vaaldam on GPRS (3G not available on the tower).

In PTA it's not strange to see 35 to 40kb/s download speeds over 3G.

I am in general VERY happy with both Vodacom's 3G speed and after sales service.

Vodacom 3G has a good download speed and I am glad Vodacom doesnt regard anything slower than 384K Broadband... grats Vodacom, now please just bring down the data costs a little

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

VODACOM

* Download time: 63.016 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 64.7 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 7.9 (kiloBytes/second)

using EDGE/GPRS usb modem off my laptop in Northern Drakensberg.

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

MTN

* Download time: 94.203 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 43.3 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 5.3 (kiloBytes/second)

using EDGE/GPRS usb modem off my laptop in Northern Drakensberg.

As you can see Vodacom is faster here than MTN. I also have erratic MTN reception.

It remains fun to sit in a Caravan park with internat acess faster than telkom dial up!!

In Pta I normally use MTN due to lower data bundle cost. In areas with EDGE coverage MTN is a lot faster than VODA.

A 3G Voda tower is being erected near my home in PTA. I will be upgrading to 3 G in Jan!!

Recommendations of cards will be appreciated.

I was watching my DUMeter whilst doing the test and the Max i received was over 370kbps but average ( line speed ) was what the Telkom test says...it is a slow compared to what other users are getting over 3G..
My signal is 4 out of 5...ill do the test again ( more revenue for Vodacom )and see the results...

New results:
Note that the first time i did the test on Vodacom, I had MSN messenger and Google talk running.When i did MTN and CellC i had them closed and now i had them closed when doing the test on Vodacom so this should be more accurate.
Also note that on all the tests my Card was connected to an external clip on screen antenna.

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 11.437 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 356.7 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 43.7 (kiloBytes/second)

DUMETER stopwatch results:
Maximum 470.9 kbps ( is that possible ???? )
and average: 314 kbps

did one more test ( even more revenue! ):

Results:
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 13.266 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 307.6 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 37.7 (kiloBytes/second)

and this time DUMETER gave a maximum of 425 kbps

Is anything over 384 kbps actually possible??

These are good speeds, compared to the other two networks!
