Neotel beefs up NeoConnect service

How much do you actually wanna pay for such a service???
Do me a favor a huge favor go and compare telkom prices with NeoTel, you'll see huge difference and to to it up u can carry your CDMA everywhere around JHB, and have access to the internet be at a friends house and people can still call u for the Price it is worth it mate, NeoTel have spent billions and once they recover their investment then prices should surely drop dude..... Trust me I've been reading up on the Equipment they use and trust me the technology is stable.... You'll see people migrating to NeoTel like 1.2.3.4.5.6. million and counting.. Give Neotel a chance, they still have to recover from their invesment on base station/ The cable and various Products. This is just the begiining my friend

No good comparing with Telkom; They're multiple time too expensive. SA lags way behind what is available with ADSL.

How about uncapped, 8mbps for around R200 - R300 per month.

I agree. Problem with neotel is that they arent offering broadband less than R300 (dont bring that neotel lite, thats not broadband, that's "just better than dialup")

The gov /doc is still involved in telecoms so no true "broadband" will exist till 2010, and after that it will slowly fall apart again.

Neotel pointed out that routes to the rest of the global Internet make use of Neotel’s Tier 1 IP Transit through the Tata Communications POP in Johannesburg, linked internationally directly across the SAT-3/SAFE submarine optical fibre system.

The company said that it was also increasing the capacity of these links to meet growing enterprise and consumer demand.
So there is still some spare capacity on the cables. Why is that not brought into service by Telkom or anyone else who has access to it?

Uploads were very consistent at 68Kbps, similar to initial testing results.
WTF? This is pretty slow. Even slower than an ADSL384's upload, which sits at 128kbps....
No way I'm playing online with that one.

At least we HAVE internet! What are you going to do with your 3874MBps uncapped line? Download Lost one week before it airs on TV so you can brag about it to the "ladiez" at the office?

wtf.

Well I give them a +1 for improving their network. If they continue to listen to customer feedback and improve steadily over time I will move to them when they become available in my area.

I think we moan too much. I am guilty of that. Let's give them some credit where credit is due.

Actually LOST is available to download some months before being aired on our circuits...

Steam, games are cheaper to buy online, but need to be fully downloaded. Lets not even go into streaming media (youtube, radio stations). VPN with friends. You could even host your how website.

Of course, you don't know about these things because here in SA we're capped. Rather download those antivirus updates right?

You mean the months to years delay between US airing and SA airing that DSTV claims is because South African customers are not used to the mid season breaks? And the fact that they get it for 20% of the price is insignificant?

While this may seem logical, this is simply not possible: The technology does not allow for it (not even WiMax) and at a basic cost of R 20 per GB (This is most likely way below cost when considering the cost of international bandwidth, local BW and the radio link) it means that anyone downloading more than 15 GB will push Neotel into bankruptcy. And what kind of after sales support can you expect with such low margins…

While I am all for great deals, there are basic limitations which do not allow for such aggressive pricing, including technology costs, SAT3 costs etc.

I agree – it is very easy to say ‘I want this specific service’, but first find a comparable offering in the market, compare pricing and then start to criticize. Neotel’s pricing is very aggressive – so much so that basically no provider can match it (close to or below cost)…

The basic problem still is that Telkom prides itself in being very efficient when it manages to compete with cheap technology ADSL against expensive technology wireless internet access.

As much as one wants to fry the cellular guys: They do provide some of the cheapest 3G services in the world.
