Neotel beefs up NeoConnect service

There are a few who are using NeoTel, those are the guys who are in their coverage areas, like JHB or PTA etc.

Few of them, not 1 000's, but a few enough to be able to comment.

Neotel in Pretoria is almost non-existing.

Only a few square kilometers are covered.

You will have to rely on the Joburg guys.
 
Local speeds ranged between 967Kbps and 2 111Kbps with an average downlink speed of 1489Kbps. International speed tests gave an average download speed of 617Kbps.

Neotel's international speeds look very good in comparison to Telkom's ADSL 4 Mbps shaped. Not quite there on local speeds: Neotel - "between 967Kbps and 2 111Kbps" Vs Telkom - average speed of 2579 Kbps.

The average international download speed for Telkom’s ADSL 4 Mbps service was 393 Kbps – around 9.5% of the advertised speed.

Their offers aren't bad, to me the biggest problem to me is the equipment you have to use to access it. How hard can it be to bring out a router with ethernet ports that allows you to plug in your own cordless phone and connect a wireless router? I'm sure that would make people a lot more interested in it. That and an option where you can be on the net and make calls simultaneously.
 
I need low latency, so when wimax lands ill change over no matter what. Telkom doesnt deserve my business.
 
RPM: I assume by your response that SAT3 charges per GB for bandwidth? Archaic idiots! I can't wait for the new cables to land. They quoted prices per mbps if I'm not mistaken. That makes a world of difference! I suppose at the end of the day it's really SAT3 milking us and not necessarily Telkom (Although their local peering charges are ridiculous).

They do charge per Mbps (or more correctly for STM1 to STM 64), but it can always be equated to a per-GB pricing. One can, for example, calculate how many GB can be downloaded per month using a 1 Mbps connection, and then easily calculate the minimum per GB cost for that connection.

Would that be a fair comparison? People's downloading isn't uniform throughout the day and night so you can't really in practice convert per Mbps to per GB can you? I mean a lot of extra capacity would be needed at peak times that isn't used at 2 AM.

Please show me where you are getting these prices from? I looked at British and Australian telecoms and could not see this pricing.

Supply and Demand Curve. Lower the supply, and with the high demand, you can charge more. Simple economics.
 
If I can do 13GB's a month on 64k.. I wonder how much I can do on Neotel.... :D lol will need a new HDD!
 
Good to see that they are listening. Now we just need:
1) A router with RJ45 connections
2) A Seacom cable
 
We moan to little IMO. Thats why we pay through our @rses! Tough luck ey :rolleyes: whatever guys, seriously.

Anyway more on topic a proper online gamer still can't use this service according to those specs :( so price is irrelevant to something I can't really use. Therefor I comment from the sideline and say once again STOP SAYING AG SHAME GIVE THEM A CHANCE!!!!!!!! this is business afterall. I actually !!expected!! that it would be easy to compete with the likes of one of the most unethical and ridiculously overpriced Telecoms operators in the world. I guess my expectations were a little too high then? :/ :/ :/ :/

Anyway good on them for at least trying to improve their service.

You ask too much! We only have 1 cable AND we are at the bottom of the world and you are asking Neotel, who IMO is doing great with support and products to liquidate themselves
