Hmm, very interested to see what channels these guys are going to be able to secure. If they can get the American Sci-fi channel I might be interested :D

I just hope they get ALL international and domestic rugby,cricket.......

HOw does IPTV work? Are you still gonna need a huge cap? Or does IPTV tegnology work different?

I call bs on the complexity of offering customers the option of choosing their own channels. Give each channel a price per month let us choose and then add them together.... DA DAAAA.

PS, i might be over simplifying this?

how much for what and what quality?

well they sort of have the infrastructure to provide the service...

@joker, no it will not work towards your cap... :) you'll be able to watch for a few hours lol

but its telkom you neva know....

I agree that would be the best method, but it is not practical in real terms. Nobody in the world gives you that much flexibility in terms of channel ordering. Even the FCC in the USA has been threatening to force Cable and Sattelite providers to start doing it, but they have not yet pushed it through. The reason is that smaller less popular channels will lose out on revenue. For example the weather channel, Fashion TV, the financial channels would never survive on their own, they depend on cross-subsidisation for their survival, but overall they add "value" to a bouquet by "fleshing it out".

What they would have to do is to group a few of these smaller channels together for survival, for example if you order the Sci-Fi channel you get the weather channel with it.

You might say, well - just let those smaller channels die out... but actually you will be pushing up the cost of the other more popular channels since they in turn are also cross-subsidised by the smaller channels (i.e. the satellite operating cost is spread over a larger selection of channels).

Hope that makes sense.

I'm fairly certain Supersport has exclusive live broadcasting rights on most international and domestic rugby and cricket matches for at least the next few years.

Pay-TV competitor ready to go

Super 5 Media expects broadcast uplink license from ICASA this week

....

The impending issuance of Super 5 Media’s broadcast uplink license may be a sign that ICASA is ready to issue the same licence to competitor ODM, which in turn will hopefully stimulate competition in the pay-TV market in 2010.

Notice the disclaimer via the word "hopefully".
<synicism>I think 2012 is more like it if ICASA has anything to do with it, and it won't be much cheaper than DSTV.</synicism>

YES YES YES!!!!!!!

So whats the chances that your current dish will pick up the signal, then just send it to the splitter which one goes to the DSTV box and other goes to the S5M box.

Or maybe we'll need a tri LNB receiver, up from the current twin LNB's

Amazing how super 5 media has been so silent behind the scenes and all of a sudden the uplink license is going to be granted whilst ODM are yet to release their major announcement to the media, despite being around much longer.

Super 5 along with the inventiveness of the chinese could do wonders for the tv starved SA consumer market.

Looks like ODM has another huge threat lurking in front of them.
I can see that this poll is going to reflect badly for ODM.

After I fell of the chair to see that ex-Telkom Media is actually pulling its finger...

When I came across this:
Van Zyl did however confirm that Super 5 Media would not be following On Digital Media’s (ODM’s) route of allowing users to choose the channels they would like to watch as “this is an additional cost to ODM, from a billing perspective there is a cost involved [in providing statements for so many different customers]”.
Sounds just like DSTV where they stated, this is not viable.

We (Mulitchoice) know that you really want to watch the Discover/National Geographic channels which is only on premium... So you pay more and we make up some crappy packages to get you hooked on wanting more.

What I would like to know:
  • Cost
  • Channels
  • Decoder (generic or lock-in)
  • Website?

Agree with you. They will have to be rather creative to take customers from Multichoice.

No doubt their sport channel offerings is going to be rather uncompetitive until the years of contract on major sports is up for Supersport. And then SS might still have the edge in price they can offer. Take the PSL as an example.

The broadcasting is imminent!!!
