Telkom explains slow ADSL speeds

so does that mean it will get worse every month end, because there will be more and more subscribers?

We suspect that the slow response is related to the sudden increase in demand for international bandwidth as customers attempt to utilize their monthly cap optimally.

Optimal use of the cap would be to simply remove the cap - it would help Telkom too!

We did however increase the international bandwidth temporarily to address the end of month peak

How do they do that? Why not just leave it increased? - Typical

Translation: "we couldn't be bothered providing a decent service seeing as the [-]idiots[/-] customers have no choice and end up paying us regardless"

Telkomese translated: We have no clue what happened but we think our idiotic capping policy turned around and bit us in the ass

They would then have to pay for that extra bandwidth and telkom is all about maximizing profits.

Sorry for the naivety here, but we pay per GB (with markup) so surely the more we use the more they gain?

Or, are they paying for a bandwidth chunk on SAT3 used or unused...

Telkom Eskom - What forward thinking and planning companies. For years now Telkom barely managed to scrape through at month end, now it has some serious problems.

I for one would not download as much at month-end if I could help it at all. But with the price of bandwidth, I have to ensure that my cap is not reached before month-end. If I then have bandwidth to spare, I download less needed things at month end. By not providing me with a service yesterday, my Xbox could not download 500 mbytes yesterday, so I used less than my cap.

But magically, after 12 last night it downloaded it no problem.

Do you believe that Web Africa will relocate the 500 megs to yesterday. Of course not, bot they and Telkom scored.

Scrap the monthly cap, it is just problematic!

Speaking to colleagues, it seems like everybody using the SAIX network were having issues - from Dial up, ISDN, ADSL, local and international.

Horse manure, my ADSL line is like that every frikkin day.

Lets see quick, yesterday, the last day of the month I battled to download an update from HP using my 512K adsl line which should run at 50K/sec right!

It was running at 2.7K/sec or somewhere around that blistering pace. ;)
Please note that I had no trouble whatsoever downloading the same update from the same site using my Vodacom 3G card, speeds in excess of 100K/sec.

OK so it is the FIRST day of the month today, which would mean that (according to TELKOM logic) there are no bandwidth hogs around right.
Speed today on the same download on the ADSL line is better, its 3.8K/sec average
You will please excuse me if I am not jumping for joy here..

Bunch of frikkin liers.

EDIT:

“We suspect that the slow response is related to the sudden increase in demand for international bandwidth as customers attempt to utilize their monthly cap optimally. Telkom will continue to monitor the situation and address bottlenecks as they occur,” Telkom concluded.
We,,, er, I suspect you are talking ****!

edit edit: And just before I get accused by an entity of being a bandwidth hog and p2p junkie, here is the download in question. Step 3

What Nonsense are they talking. I've been getting network failure updates non-stop about links being down between here and taiwan, NY. Not to mention that they have had a couple of hassles on the local exchanges as well. It would be so nice if they could just be honest and admit they have problems.

I'm sorry... all I heard was *blah blah blatant profiteering blah incompetence*

What the excuse boils down to is: "If you use your ADSL you'll slow everything down so it's your fault."

I think Telkom pretty much would love it if we all bought ADSL and accounts and then just didn't use them. Perfect world for them.

Eskom's in the exact same ballpark. We're now having to cut down on electricity so that we can cover their shortfall.

I could barely do ANY surfing for things. Tried downloading Opera. Twice Average speed was 3.6K a second. Slower than stupid dial-up! Eventually, the downloads would freeze or the connection would die.

Telkom, I can't wait until I get bandwidth direct from someone not willing to severely rip me off.

Then I will take your bandwidth and shove it up your ...

I'm guessing so I could be wrong but from how I understand it they increased their overall bandwidth to their international peering partners. For that they would have to pay more and would therefore, obviously, prefer us to use up our bandwidth allocations on existing international or local traffic rather then spend more for extra capacity.

If Telkom can increase the bandwidth at any time, why dont they leave it like that.

In other words we can get full 1MB, 512K or 384K International speeds.

Cannot wait till Neotel opens its doors.

Cheers
BB :)
